This is a very disappointing book indeed. It is very thorough as one would expect but it really should be titled Race Sailing for Dummies. It is written by sailors who crew large yachts and quickly skips the basics of various types of dinghy sailing in favour of this more expensive and elite sport. Consequently it is not the book for beginners it purports to be, and any novice who would describe themselves as a Dummy is unlikely to be boarding a cruising or racing yacht at first. It has put me off buying any of the other 'For Dummies' series!

This was bought for friend who bought a boat, and has never sailed in his life.......... He laughed at the present, but then said it was the best present he had had for years....... there are pictures to show you what they mean by all the sailing terms.. he now has the knowledge on how to do things, he just needs the practical experience, what a wonderful book.. well worth the money.

Since I was a fresh sailor, and bought a boat only months ago, I hoped this book would give me a fast track to understand the basics. Not only did it give me enough to sail my 23 foot boat from day one, but the chapters about how to optimize and sail faster gave me a detailed understanding on fine tuning the sails. By reading this, I now have a good understanding how the wind works on the boat, and when I at one point experienced wind that might have been too much - what I had learned from this book made me feel secure, and I was able to trim my sails to a level that made it just fun.

If you are planning, or just have bought a sailboat, I recommend this as good starting point. If you want to learn more about how to trim your sails, what to bring on a longer trip or what to do when you visit a new harbor - this also is a must have.

It will have a permanent place in my boat as a reference!

Useless for persons new to sailing very little instructional text, just story telling of experiences. One expected much more instruvtion as is the norm for this genre of books.

My boyfriend and I bought this for the Kindle and we were expecially keen to learn the different knots we would need when going on our first ever sailing trip with friends.

Unfortunately the diagrams in the book do not fit on the Kindle screen, and so we're unable to see the final steps in the knot tying process.

It's a shame because the Kindle is the perfect size to take on a boat and the book is written in an engaging style, but for us it has been a big disappointment. I'm sure the paperback version does the job though.

This book is excellent for those who are interested in learning to sail. The sailing terms are explained in such a fun way that they are easy to understand and you can't wait to get in the boat!
