Book Description

18 Mar 2010

Robin Knox-Johnston said it could be suicidal. The head of the Royal Yachting Association told him not to go. Mike Perham ignored them and in August 2009, at the age of just 17 years, 5 months and 11 days, became the youngest person to have sailed solo around the world.

Sailing the Dream tells the story of that amazing voyage, a nine-month odyssey full of technical and navigational challenges that would stump sailors twice Mike's age. His yacht TotallyMoney.com was knocked over, battered by the oceans and repeatedly damaged, but Mike battled on, at times surfing down 50-foot waves in 50-knot winds at speeds of up to 28 knots. Despite these conditions, sleep deprivation and extreme physical exhaustion, Mike's positive attitude continually shines through.

Through all the adventures on the high seas, Mike also talks about the team behind his trips, both when sailing round the world and across the Atlantic at the age of 14, and the stresses and sacrifices involved for his family and friends. His is an inspirational as well as thrilling story, and one for all the ages.

Book Description

The incredible true story of the youngest person to sail around the world single-handed

From the Back Cover

More people have been in space than have sailed solo around the Earth. It is a journey fraught with danger at every turn, with little time for sleep or pause for rest. It is the toughest challenge in the nautical world. At the age of seventeen, Mike Perham joined the select band of sailors to achieve that feat.

In Sailing the Dream, Mike tells the story of the incredible 30,000-mile voyage that made him the youngest circumnavigator in history. As he raced across the waves in his Open 50 yacht TotallyMoney.com, the journey soon became a struggle against wild seas, failing equipment and the loneliness of the long-distance sailor. Despite the boat being knocked over and battered by the oceans and having to put in for damage repairs that turned the trip into a nine-month odyssey, Mike battled on, surfing down fifty-foot waves at speeds of up to 28 knots to realize his goal.

Yet through all the difficulties, Mike's positive attitude shines through. Sailing the Dream is an inspirational and thrilling tale of adventure on the high seas, and of how you can be as big as the dreams you dare to live.

Bought for my 83 year old Father, he is enthralled by the book, and the technology that has made this sort of trip safer over the last few years allowing contact with land. Well written and suitable for any age. Really inspiring

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Inspiring Story : He Sailed His Dream ! 13 Sep 2011
By Malcolm TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Many of us will have followed the 30,000 mile voyage of 17 year old Mike Perham on TV, radio and in the Press, but now we have Mike's own account of how he became the youngest person to sail single-handed around the world.

This bright, courageous teenager, really does live up to the title of this great book. Not only has he Sailed The Dream his whole ethos can best be summed up in his own words. "I try to live my life to the full and make every day count."

In Sailing The Dream, we follow Mike on his epic journey circumnavigating the world. The triumphs, the tears as he clung on to the main mast while fixing ropes in the toughest weather conditions and despite all of this Mike managed to keep his head and press on to the finish.

In a world where young people are criticised at every turn, Mike is an inspiration to us all.
An excellent read, well worth the money, and a book that you will want to read again.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best adventure books I've read 11 May 2011
By timmyuk
Format:Hardcover
This is an unbelievably good book. The fact that the voyage ever went ahead is incredible in itself. I was rather dubious about reading a book written by such a young chap, but thankfully M.Perham has proved my doubts wrong. I followed his adventure at the time and was amazed that someone so young completed a round the world voyage - albeit with a few unscheduled stops. Surely Mike won't rest on his laurels and will hopefully continue to test himself. He's a star already, but I don't doubt we'll be hearing a lot more from him.
