Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This release is a welcome addition to the ASV stable of British light music. Amusingly, Binge's most famous number, "Elizabethan Serenade", is placed first as if to invite us to get the nostalgia for the Home Service's Children's Favourites programme off our chests and then proceed with the business of exploring the wealth of other classics which show just why "Ronnie" was so valued by the likes of the great Mantovani as a composer/arranger. Having said that, the first CD features the (slightly) more serious side to Binge's work--including the Saxophone Concerto, jaunty and melting by turns, and the substantial, intriguing Saturday Symphony. Both of these works are conducted by Binge himself. The second CD takes us squarely inside the dreamy Mantovanian world, including pieces incorporating the famous cascading strings effect that was such a Binge trademark. More information on these numbers in the sleeve note would have been welcome. All told, five orchestras do service over the two CDs. Naturally enough, some offer better performances than others and the quality of recorded sound also varies, although nothing that need put off existing or potential Binge fans. Dream away... --Andrew Green
