Product Description

Fantastic computer graphics systematically explain how to tune–your–yacht, keelboat or dinghy.

This beautifully illustrated and well–organised book shows the reader step by step, how to trim their sails and rig for maximum performance.  Ivar Dedekam’s revolutionary approach to sail and rig tuning tackles the practical and realistic elements of tuning your boat as well as the theory of sail aerodynamics.  The book covers the many variations in boat, sail and rig design.

From the Author

The making of a different book on sailing
Hello readers I have been sailing in Norway and the Atlantic for many years and have always wanted to learn more of how to tune sails and rig better. I read every book on the topic I could come over but I alway felt confused afterwards. There always seemed to be contradictions between the various chapters in a book as there were contradictions between different books -even if they had been written by very famous yachtsmen. I therefore asked question and asked again until I thought I had it right. I then sat down and tried to systematize the informations I received making illustrations rather than using confusing photos.

In this book I have tried to distil those rules of thumb and theories commonly agreed upon among the sailing community. What makes this book different from the most other books on the topic, is the short, concentrated text with adjacent corresponding illustrations. 80 pages with more than 150 colour illustrations hopefully giving an interesting, systematic and easily accessible introduction to the art of trimming sails and rig. The aim is to make it easy to find, understand and last but not least remember the information that the reader is seeking.

I found this concise guide to rig tuning extremely useful when I first read it. It is well laid out, with factual guidlines to help one understand how each different sail works, its interaction with the other sails and then instructions for its settings. Most points are accompanied by a coloured diagram.

The first chapters cover the most basic sail theory, followed by partical sail tuning instructions. The second part of the book deals with more advanced techniques such a spinnaker control and finally mast and rigging set up.

The paperback book is small and easy to carry around. Great to read on the metro in the morning !

This tuning guide is only topped by the sail manufacturer's own tuning guide for your specific sails.
For beginners, this book works as a basic textbook for how to make the boat go forward. For the advanced sailor, it guides you in fine tuning, techniques and engineering of the sails.

As the years have gone by and my sailing experience has increased, I still learn new things when I open this book. Both for racing and cruising.

This book is a 'MUST' and should be in every sailor's shelf - worn out.

This is the second copy of this book I have purchased as my daughter, who teaches sailing for flotilla guests in Greece pinched the first one. It is very well presented, giving usefull, and useable, info for the beginner while containing all the more experienced sailor could ask for. You can gradually build on your knowledge as understanding dawns! or use it as a reference for specific situations. All in all an elegant and classy book.
