Dick gauchan first came to my attention during the miners strike when I heard him sing songs to themes that no one else dared which encapsulated exactly how I felt. I approached this CD with trepidation, would the old Dick Gauchan who had sung such brilliant songs as "revolution" have melowed, the answer of course was no.

This is an interesting compilation of songs ranging from almost a straight folk song "vincent 1952" to a critique of cultural nationalism and finishing with two anthems, "Sail on" and "to freedom come all ye". This is a fantastic CD that I would recomend to anyone who likes folk music.

Definitve Gaughan 18 Aug 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album shows Dick Gaughan at the height of his very considerable powers. The absolute stand out track for me is his phenomonal version of the late Hamish Henderson's '51st Highland Division's Farewell to Sicily'. The first time I heard it all the hairs on my body stood up, he was born to play it.
This is not to belittle the other tracks, 'Geronimo's Cadilac' and '52 Vincent' (Sex death and motorbikes) are magnficent tracks, and finishing the album with another Hamish Henderson song this time his magnificent hymn to international understanding 'Freedom come all ye' rounds off one of the finest albums of the last decade.

No Dross Here.... 4 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
This is a beautiful album that I would recommend to anyone, not just those with an interest in folk music. Some will find the strong Scottish accent difficult at first but perserve, this is pretty much as good as it gets. Great songs, great playing, genuine passion, much humour and a superb recording for good measure.

The highlights are `51st (Highland) Division's Farewell To Sicily' and a cover of `Ruby Tuesday' that makes the Stones original sound lifeless. There is no dross here - put the effort in and this album will repay you in spades.
