Sidi Toure's "Sahel Folk" is an extraordinary collection of music written by several traditional musicians from Mali, all of whom perform alongside Toure on this album. The music, although somewhat different in style from one song to another, represents the quiet, acoustic, rhythmically complex side of west African music, perhaps similar to the music of Afel Bocoum or Ali Farka Toure (particularly in his "Radio Mali" album). "Sahel Folk" is a goldmine for those of us who are fans of music from Mali, because it provides the opportunity to hear songs written by a number of Malian songwriters, many of whom are not well known in the West, despite the beauty of their writing and playing. If you enjoy west African music, or any form of quiet, subtle, folk music from any part of the world, it's likely that you'll want to know "Sahel Folk" as well. I listen to Malian music continually, and "Sahel Folk" is one of most-played albums in my collection. It always sounds fresh and new, no matter how often I hear it.
