Sagem DSI86 HD Satellite TV Digital Box with Freesat HD
I bought this Freesat receiver a couple of weeks ago and I have not regretted this purchase at all - the receiver is doing exactly what I expected it to do and it even exceeded my expectations.
The unit came with an HDMI cable and plenty of useful information in the user leaflets. But I soon found out that there is no urgent need for assistance as the box guided me through the installation
process with clear instructions. After only 3 minutes my box was set up and the first of over 140 free channels (no more Sky bills!!!) appeared on the screen.
The menu itself is very straightforward too as most of the functions and settings are arranged in a very logical way. The programme guide allows me to check what is going on in a week's time
and considering the price of this unit I am more than happy to accept the lack of a hard disk. If I really want to record something I can still use the AUX port to record directly to my DVD recorder.
Another very interesting function that I was not aware of is the parental control which allows me to create a channel list for my children, with locked or hidden individual channels.
Coming to the main point, the crisp picture quality:
I can finally make use of my HD TV as the DSI86HD box receives HD channels. The HD quality is simply amazing, in particular when watching documentaries. And if I change the video settings to a
higher solution even the standard definition programmes are looking much sharper than with my old box!

The Sagemcom DS186 STB looks and feels quite cheap and plasticky when you first unpack it but once it's installed beneath your TV it's really a non-issue. Luckily the remote control feels more substantial and is comprehensive and clearly laid-out. The onscreen user-interface is also clear and easy to navigate and quite responsive in use.
When this STB first appeared Sagem had claimed it would be compatible with BBC iPlayer after a future firmware update. The update took some time to arrive but is now available over-the-air or via Sagemcom's website (I'll post the URL in the comments) and can be installed manually by using a USB flash-drive plugged into the port on front of the unit. The update means you can connect your Sagemcom box to your broadband router using the ethernet port on the rear - note that it needs at least a 1Mbps connection. Now you can access BBC iPlayer via a special menu which appears when you press the red button (while watching BBC1) and watch iPlayer content directly on your TV.
The Sagemcom box isn't the most sophisticated or expensive-looking but it's a great value way to get HD content on your TV and the new BBC iPlayer compatibility make it an even more compelling product. However, if you're thinking of buying one to make use of an old satellite dish then don't do what I did and get the box BEFORE you've checked the cables still work! Luckily Amazon sell good value satellite cabling too...

Living in the Irish Republic and other than the fact I had to enter the UK area code that was in the manual to start installing, everything went fine! Setup worked great! Picture is now HD quality on my HD Samsung TV, so very pleased with this product, works very well! Really like the fact that the best channels are all sorted. The box has a good Program guide and having had an old FTA set top box which pulled in hundreds of channels when you tuned, having to spend an evening deleting them was kind of painful, so all in all this box is well worth the money spent.
There is an option in the Republic of Ireland to get a combination box that does the Irish and British channels but is quite expensive.

Disappointed about performance
