Vodafone has teamed up with mobile phone manufacturer Sagem to design an attractive handset that's easy to use. Instead of following trends, the design has been influenced by customer research and feedback. The result is the Sagem VS1, a curvaceous beauty with a large colour screen that offers helpful tips if you ever get stuck. There's a simple switch to lock the keypad and another to adjust the ringtone, making these services very straightforward. You'll also notice three separate buttons on the top of the phone: one returns you to the main screen, the second lists your contacts and the third is for voice messages and texts.
The phone's message button lights up whenever a message is received, like a home answering machine. To listen to your voice messages or to read your texts, you only need to press the button.
Of course, there'll be some people who want megapixel cameras and music players on their mobiles. If you don't - or if you know someone who's after a no-nonsense handset - the Vodafone Simply Sagem VS1 is an excellent place to start.

sagem VS-1, my new friend,

I am a woman in my fifties who has owned but never really got the hang of two mobile phones before. With my daughter living at the other end of the country, I really wished I could find a mobile I wasn't afraid of so that I could keep in touch with her at any time. Reviews of the Vodaphone Sagem VS -1 persuaded me to give it a go and I'm so glad I did. It's clearly been designed with me in mind! The booklets are written in clear English (although I wish they'd included the instructions on how to get your own number which you have to enter at the start of set-up -you do it by ringing your landline or another mobile and then checking the number on that phone). The buttons on the phone are big and clear-I particularly like the lock-keypad button on the side with its sliding mechanism and open and shut padlock sign. The screen is big so you can see plenty of text (oh yes, I do text messaging now-it's so easy with this phone) You can't get lost because, unlike all other mobiles I've tried, this one doesn't lead you up the electronic garden path, everything is clearly marked and explained in WORDS not arcane symbols, and if you do feel unsure of anything, the 'house' button takes you back to the home screen (where your own number is handily displayed) immediately. I actually feel that this phone is on my side rather than being an enemy trying to outwit me. When I put it back in its little recharging cradle at night, I often give it an affectionate pat on the head, I'm just so glad I bought it.

If you just want a phone - this is an excellent choice,

We bought this phone for my wife who hates mobile phones but realises she actually needs one. This has turned out to be a great choice with easy to use functions, an easily read screen and easy to set up. This is great for those that just require a phone - it will not get lost like other micro phones and has a solid feel to it. My wife actually likes it !!!

I bought this phone for my mother-in-law who has not mastered setting her video recorder in 5 years and who still asks someone to reset the clocks when the hour goes on or back. She is often on her own, whether just at home, in the garden or down the shops, and we wanted her to be able to summon help in an emergency and also to be able to keep in touch with grandchildren who have not mastered the ordinary phone or letter writing. The Sagem VS-1 has been easy to use and easy to explain, and the accompanying booklet is simple with good pictures. It has been useful to talk to the customer service lady on mother's behalf and she has added the Beat the Clock rate for evening and weekend calls, also I recommend that you get them to unsubscribe her for the "helpful" text messages about Vodafone's services which may beep at any time, day and night, and have been extrememly worrying ("what should I do? Do I have to reply? What does it mean?") We have done making calls, taking calls, and are working on texts. Now my father wants one.
