Line 50 made its debut in the early 1990s, pitching at the more established business--typically those with up to 50 employees and a turnover of up to 2 million pounds. It's quickly become Britain's most popular PC-based accounting package, and version 7 boasts some improvements.
The first bonus is that accountants getting to grips with the company books won't have much of a learning curve here. Running on the firm's PCs, Line 50 presents an interface familiar to anyone who uses Windows. It's simple to import data from Excel, Word and Outlook. The package contains the three basic ledgers--sales, purchase and nominal ledger--plus management reports, VAT management and credit control: everything that's needed to keep business ticking.
New in Version 7 is a simpler installation and set-up process. Sage haS tweaked routine tasks, cutting the number of keystrokes required. There are improved reporting and analysis functions, and Sage has beefed up the forecasting aspects. You now have the option of selecting multiple delivery addresses--handy if you deal with clients based at several sites, and there is enhanced support for e-banking. In sum, there are no radical changes then, but it's enough to keep Line 50 in pole position. --John Rennie
