2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing product, 15 Mar 2006
By D Williams (Kent, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I’ve been using sage accounts for my small business for 4 years. To get beyond the very basics you need expensive and time-consuming training. My accountant recommended a simple spreadsheet accounting system, which I have been using for the last 4 months and I have to say, has been quite liberating. There are definitely better products out there and I would urge anyone looking for accounting software to avoid this product. Having said that, ‘Sages Payroll’ software is brilliant & I continue to use to this day.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good budget choice - if you know what you're doing!, 13 Dec 2005
Having read the existing reviews from completely opposite ends of the spectrum, I felt compelled to add some moderating comments.

The bad reviews are probably from people who have not had a great deal of experience with accounts software and I can fully understand their dislike of Sage, as it is not the most intuitive of programs. However, I believe if you are computer literate and have experience of other accounts packages and a decent quantity of common sense, you should be able to cope with Instant Accounts and will probably find it more than adequate for the needs of a small business.

As for the person who said you can't change the Nominal Ledger setup - just go to the NL, then "Record" to add a new nominal code, or select an item and press "Delete" to remove it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Instant Accounts- The Truth!, 22 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Instant Accounts is a good piece of software for the price. The fact that it is an accountant's favourite, is easily upgradeable, well supported, easy to use and there is an abundance of training material probably plays a large part in this.
Transactions are listed by transaction number, from the financials screen they can be sorted by the various different column headings.
Customers, suppliers, nominal codes, invoices, products etc can be sorted by account reference, balance, name or description. You can also apply a search to filter out old or irrelevant accounts/records amongst other things.
The nominal ledger allows for multiple charts of accounts as well.
The VAT return function is fantastic! It picks everything up and breaks it down into each tax rate and which area of the VAT return each transaction applies to.
lots of reports are available as well as invoice layouts, which can be amended and tweaked to suit the needs of an individual. This is only to a certain extent as major modifications require the ability to use the report designer function which doesn't appear until instant+
The only drawback is lack of stock control or report writing. This is left to more advanced versions because, lets face it, this is entry level software for small businesses, beginners and companies who do not require complex functions such as report writing, order control or in depth departmental analysis.
Overall, a great piece of kit. would recommend this for people with basic accounting needs or basic book-keeping knowledge.
