The Tea Maker: with Variable Brew Temperature, Time and Strength for Different Teas

"The younger a tea leaf is harvested, the lower the temperature that bitter tannins are released."

So like most things, the right time and temperature are critical for a great cuppa. So as well as being a kettle, this product makes tea perfectly and automatically. You can even programme it to start before you wake up and watching the basket move up and down is just brilliant!

Whether you prefer green, white, oolong, herbal or black tea this 'kettle' knows the precise temperature for it. You can also control the strength of the tea (from mild to strong). Once the water has reached the optimal temperature, the stainless steel tea basket silently lowers itself into the water for auto seeping. The automatic lifting and lowering of the basket allows the tea leaves to circulate for maximum infusion. Once complete, the chime sounds to let you know your tea is ready to enjoy. But just in case you're not ready, there's a 60 minute 'keep warm' button.

Heston's Tip: When it comes to brewing, the less oxidised teas like green and white teas release their tannins at a lower temperature. If you brew too hot, the bitter flavours over power the tea. Conversely, if you brew too cold you don’t release enough flavour from the leaf. The right balance is all about the right temperature.

The Kettle That Makes Tea, Perfectly

For the perfectly balanced brew, different teas need to be steeped at different temperatures and for different times. So how do you get it right?

This revolutionary kettle has a motorised basket that automatically lowers tea leaves into and out of the water at precisely the right time. It has fifteen pre-programmed settings, plus fully variable temperature and custom controls. It even has a programmable start feature so your tea will be ready for you when you wake up. Detach the basket and it's a variable temperature, glass kettle.

Perfect kettle. Perfect tea.

Makes Tea

The fully automatic basket lowers the tea leaves into water once the pre-selected temperature is achieved. It then raises the tea leaves out of the water once optimum steeping time is reached. Perfect tea all at the press of a button.

Variable Temperature

Different teas brew best at different temperatures--you can choose from variable temperature settings. The kettle automatically turns off and also has a keep warm feature.

Programmable LCD

LCD screen allows you to program temperature and a start time.

Auto Off

The kettle senses pressure and turns off once boiled or when there is no water in the kettle.

When I first saw this product (in John Lewis) I thought "£200 for something that makes tea!!??" I had been trying to make tea the way they serve it in Chinese restaurants for years without much success. Most green teas and herbal concoctions tasted less than satisfying. Even English Breakfast tea was a bit hit and miss. Then I got this machine from Amazon (less than JL) and my eyes were opened to the world of tea. Most of us think we can make tea, but we can't. Temperatures and timing are critical and different across a range of teas. The light Jasmine tea I had been trying to make should only receive water at 70 degrees c and steep for a short time. Also, like most people, I have abandon the teapot and made tea from teabags in a mug. Forget it. Tea bags, whatever they contain, are no substitute for proper loose teas. This machine brews at the right temperature for each tea and for the right length of time (according to your taste) and then lifts the tea out of the water. It is like drinking tea for the first time and there is world of teas to experiment with. Still expensive but life-changing.

I have had the Sage tea maker for a couple of weeks now so here are my views on it. On the looks its ok I think, not to obtrusive because of the glass. It can seem to be a bit bulky, but when on the kitchen table it blends in. I use a tea cosy to keep the tea warm while sitting down which works well. The kettle is easy to fill though the measuring scale is behind the handle so you have to twist your hand/wrist to see the amount you're filling it with. A minor gripe, but it is a bit irritating. The scale should have been on the side, but this is probably due to design /looks.

The tea making is relatively simple after using it the first few times. You fill a basket with tealeaves and place it on a runner inside the kettle; it is magnetically pulled into place. The mesh in the basket allows the water and tea leaves to brew, though it holds on to the tea leaves when you are emptying it. I end up having to rinse it out with the tap on full blast and even then you may have to use a brush. The tea is lowered into the water at the preset temperature, by the machine/or your temp, and raises it once the preset time/or your time is done. No more bitter tea. I set the Sage working my tea and do other things, like making breakfast for example and not worrying about the time and I assure you this is a good thing.

The thing I really like is the custom mode where you can adjust the water and times for all your different types of tea leaves. I use lots of different types - I like my tea - and the Sage makes for me a perfect brew each time. It made my white tea with no problem. It's like a having an excellent coffee maker for tea - about time too.

Wow. Now enjoying proper tea...or should I say, waking up and going downstairs to a freshly brewed cuppa! My wife bought me a bean to cup coffee machine and so I bought this for her. However, I t's making me appreciate tea again! Cleaning, as always a little pain. Found white vinegar the answer.

Enjoying experimenting with other teas now.

Yes, you may think £199 is a lot of money for something that boils water.

However, the Tea Maker by Heston (AKA The Tea Kettle by Breville) is something that is going to revolutionise your love for tea - AND save you money in the long run. Bear with me on that one...

If you love tea, you'll know that loose leaf tea can offer a much tastier and enjoyable cup of tea than the floor scrapings that normally make their way into our beloved standard-issue tea bags. However, brewing tea leaves in a teapot or cup infuser can be a hassle, and if you don't use precision when gauging temperature and time you could be missing out on a cup of tea that is pure heaven to imbibe. A couple of disappointing brews and you might find your way back to tea bags, never knowing the perfect cuppa was within reach if you'd just reduced that brew time by 30 seconds.

Heston's Tea Maker lets you make those precision measurements every single time without fail - just set the type of tea, and the desired strength (or opt for your own custom settings) - fill the kettle and tea basket, press a button and, BOOM, once your water temperature is reached the leaves will lower into the water, infuse their lovely tea goodness, and float back up again once the optimum time has elapsed. You will never taste tea this good. Believe me.

However, where the Tea Maker saves you money is in that elusive "second steep". Tea leaves can be brewed a few times so once you pour your first brew, fill up the kettle and let those leaves loose for a second, or even a third time. The Tea Maker makes exceptional multiple steeps, thus saving you money in the long run too.

It also looks great and is made from wonderfully robust materials.

If you love tea, you will not regret buying this.
