The Soft Open Kettle: with Wide Access Lid for Easy Cleaning

"Most eight year olds can tell you that steam rises."

Most twelve year olds can tell you that it becomes hot water when it cools down. So why do kettle lids flick up so quickly and splash hot water all over you? Well finally, here's one that doesn't.

And, even better, it's also a high powered kettle, so it doesn't take ages to boil.

Heston's Tip: Dunking your biscuit to make it moist, as well as rehydrating your mouth with a well brewed cuppa, allows your taste buds to detect more flavour and your nose to detect more aroma because your tongue and nasal passages become both warm and moist. The flavour release happens more quickly and is more intense.

Soft Lid, Gently Does It

The ritual of enjoying a cup of tea or coffee is one of life's more tranquil moments. So why shouldn't making a cuppa be part of the tranquillity?

A soft grip handle, and a soft opening lid make brewing a cuppa almost as tranquil as drinking one. The push button, soft opening lid prevents hot water splattering and staggers steam release. There is also a 1.7 litre cord-free jug, concealed element and a removable scale filter.

Tranquillity comes standard.

As relaxing as a cuppa
Soft open Lid. Slowly releases steam. Prevents splashing.

Slow Release Lid

A push button, slow release lid prevents hot water splashes when opening and staggers steam release.

Dual High Visibility Windows

Highly transparent water windows make filling fast and easy. These are positioned on both sides for maximum versatility.

Auto Off

The kettle senses pressure and turns off once boiled or when there is no water in the kettle.

At Sage, we believe that the only way to design the most innovative and useful kitchen appliances is to understand the food that they help you prepare. And what better way to innovate and develop, than to collaborate with one of the world's most celebrated food thinkers - Heston Blumenthal.

Excellent. Stainless steel both inside and out. Significantly quieter than our previous Breville filter kettle which blew up just inside of the warranty period. Rapid to boil and no funny taste or smell like the cheap plastic Currys kettle we purchased as a stopgap. Overall has a quality feel. The ting at the end of the boil is quiet and unobtrusive. Would recommend.

I spoke too soon - the soft close lid function failed on this kettle within a month which for this price is totally unacceptable - it is being returned and I have yet to decide whether to accept a refund or replacement.

Wow I thought it's just a kettle my mistake. It's so quiet and makes my coffee taste like it's from a coffee shop, and my husband says it's improved the taste of his tea. I would recommend this kettle to everyone. After having paid up to £60 for a kettle and it leaks this does more then it says on the tin.
It looks so space aged in my kitchen but I really do mean this it's well worth the money and I can see this lasting a long time as opposed to my last one which only survived a day.

probably like most people been through a few kettles - they seem to have become a commodity product these days - filters fall apart etc etc - so far very pleased - looks good gets on with boiling the water quite quickly - not very noisy - makes a pleasant soft ping from a bell in the base when boiled - been about a month and all well - worth spending the extra

Update to review - after 13 months of average usage the bottom of the kettle seems to be parting from sides and consequently it leaks - just out of 12 month guarantee - not what I would call a quality product and certainly will not waste money on any other products in this range. Back to cheap disposable kettles for me - very very disappointed.

Quick to boil, stylish design, well balanced. The level indicator on the side is easy to read. The high pitched 'ting' at the end of the boiling process is a useful touch as the sound carries well. At the expensive end of the kettle price range, but a quality product.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
My elderly Next kettle has been on it's way out for a while and I really needed to replace it as having hot water come out of the bottom is not a good thing.

Opportunity allowed me to test this kettle. Firstly, my inquisitive mind made me want to find out who "Sage" were as I doubted Heston had setup a manufacturing company. Sage are a company owned by Breville Australia who are no longer anything to do with Breville UK. Reason for a different name is hence obvious. My experience of Breville UK products is excellent, pricey but well made so I hoped and assumed this would be the case here.

Opening the box you get four bits of paper to read. One small piece of card is tied to the kettle which announces this kettles selling points:

- Soft open cushion lid - releases steam to prevent splashing.
- Dual water windows
- Large 1.7L capacity
- 3000 Watt High Power rapid boil

There are also two booklets:
1) the first is quite redundant in my opinion and is Heston's tips and techniques. It basically tells you how 4 different types of tea should be made with differing temperatures and how to dunk your biscuit. The former may be useful for the other Sage kettle where you can control the temperature but this one doesn't and I am not going to faff about sticking thermometers in my tea! And as to how to dunk a biscuit....it smacks a little too much of trying to use the fact they have paid Heston to use his name, call me cynical.
2) The instruction booklet. 9 pages for a kettle with one button! In fact only 3 relate to instructions, everything else was safety information.

You also get a warranty card.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The main feature of this kettle is the soft open lid - it does what it says on the box, but I can't say I've ever had a need for a soft open lid to my kettles and in fact I rarely even open the lids - what I loved however was the photo of Heston on the side of the box looking mesmerized by this function. Advanced technology, it is not. It also comes with a lovely little booklet, along with the instructions, on how to boil tea and dunk biscuits, really trying to stretch Heston's selling power.

The kettle I can't really fault - it's a sturdy metal kettle that feels like it's hard wearing, where as my last kettle came cracked and the lid snapped off, with the Sage by Heston Blumenthal the Soft Open Kettle feels like it's going to last. It's very well balanced with a nice wide lid so it sits comfortably, along with a sturdy handle it means it's very easy to fill-up and easy to get inside when cleaning. The indicator is clear, there's no 'is it, isn't it?' questioning whether it's actually turned on or not, and the clear ting lets you know when it's done boiling - fortunately it's quiet during boiling.

So far all my past kettles have gone the same way - the lid snaps off - so hopefully the 'soft open' feature on this kettle will help prevent that, and unlike plastic kettles at least I know this one won't break if knocked. In terms of quality you do get what you pay for, however I do also think that you're paying a little extra for Heston Blumenthal's face on the box.
