2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Ok so in computer savvy and the job that im in made me sit my ecdl.
obviously a honours degree in the subject means nothing anyhow to the review. i have tried to have a non bias review of this and look at it from what advice id give my mum if she was to use it.

Good points
The book is glossy and is big.
Nice pictures well layed out.
Friendly in structure.

Bad points:
The book generalises things to such an extent its wrong.
For instance all databases are the same and can be used in the same way like excel
Wrong some databases use sql prompts and no visual parts. It even lists them in the book! Mind you this is a fault with the exam as well.

The books examples aren't coherent. this is a complete pain in the ass if you actually need help from this book. you'll think you missed a bit out and panic. What's actually happened is the books gives you an example then jumps to another example of there own making or just leaves you and doesn't build on it.

Another bad point is the ecdl exams seam to be a MS product guide. Example question: show me where this menu is or where this option is. This isn't addressed by the book unfortunately. You have to explore on your own with the products. In this book at no time i feel the fundamentals are covered like making a mail merge or simple stuff like the layout of a letter or what to do if i want to print on a envelope. its hard to explain but it tells you the exact steps to do something but not why your doing it.

Other bad point although the book has a great history on computing and info on the internet and how it was created a lot of this isn't needed for the exam. Say you can cut 90% out of it to do the exam.
for instnace the book gives facts about processors like clock speed.
but in the exam i wasnt asked this i was aksed how to save a file to a specific directory.

I haven't read any other books that concern the ecdl but this one is poor. It feels too disjointed and lacking. If you where to read this book religiously and sit the exam having no previous experience you will be lucky to scrape 60%

poor product 27 Jan 2012
I didn't like that training. It didn't help me at all. The training itself is poor. It is very hard to learn with such a tool.
