This new history of the Royal Navy, published to coincide with the Golden Jubilee of the White Ensign Association, is a full and exciting account of all the many campaigns, operations and deployments conducted around the world from the Cold War and the Cod Wars to the Falklands War and the Gulf Wars. It has been written and compiled from privileged access to secret and confidential Admiralty Plans and Commanding Officers' reports and contains a wealth of previously unpublished material. The story of how the Royal Navy has adapted to meet the many new challenges of the modern world and how it has carried out its vital roles from manning the nation's strategic nuclear deterrent to guarding the vital offshore oil and gas facilities as well as protecting Britain's worldwide interests is a truly fascinating one, while the development of ships, submarines, aircraft, weapons, tactics and strategies as well as the changes in personnel and life at sea are brought to life by contributions from people who served over the period. Profusely illustrated throughout with many previously unpublished photographs and paintings, this beautifully-produced volume is a magnificent golden jubilee tribute to the Royal Navy.

At first sight this may be thought to be a very well illustrated coffee table book as it has a brilliant cover and many magnificent photographs of ships and aircraft. But it is very much more than that. As well as serving in many ships John Roberts held many important appointments within the Ministry of Defence supporting many Admirals and including that of being the Secretary of the Defence Operations Staff during the Falklands War. (His book contains a detailed factual but exciting and well illustrated account of that war). He has had unrivalled access to naval reports and records and enjoyed the full support of the RN Museum. His lucid style is easy to read and the book contains such a wealth of detail of all the activities and operations of the Royal Navy and the leaders who controlled it, that it will become the essential reference book on this period of naval history for future years and generations of historians. Every naval officer and all who are interested in maritime matters should have a copy.
Drawn mainly from official naval archives this is an authentic and comprehensive account of the Royal Navy's operations over the past 50 years. Of interest also to researchers & students of naval affairs, the main text is illustrated by many photographs, some official & some never published before, and enlivened by detailed explanations of several aspects of naval life and operations. It reveals how the Royal Navy, always short of funding, continually adapted with ingenuity and typical "can do" spirit to radical social and technological changes whilst "safeguarding the nation" and its vital maritime trade - on which this island nation depends for its survival - from a wide range of threats. These operations, many of them conducted unseen "over the horizon", therefore to this day remain unknown to and unappreciated by public & politicians alike. This book sets that record straight in authentic detail. Captain John Roberts served for many years on several naval HQ staffs before becoming Chief Executive of the White Ensign Association, from which he recently retired. The WEA, sponsor of this book, is a registered charity which supports the whole Royal Navy community in financial and re-employment matters.
This excellent book appears to be unique in telling the full story of what the Royal Navy has done and achieved over the last fifty years. There are so many books on the Navy covering the Falklands War and the World Wars, not to mention the achievements of Nelson's Navy but very few indeed covering recent times. It seems that the story of the Royal Navy almost comes to an end in 1945 but this splendid book reminds us that the Royal Navy has continued to do so much around the world over the last fifty years and has continued to be the prime safeguard of the Nation. With a general decline of interest in our history this book, along with Andrew Mars book on recent British history should be widely read to remind us of our place in world history. Most strongly recommended for anybody with an interest in British or Maritime history.
This book has many virtues & does show that the 'silent service' has been very active indeed since 1945. I bought it because of the good reviews, but did not find that it entirely lived up to its 5* billing. Certainly it is of great interest to those who served through the times it covers, but I am not sure that it has the necessary spark to make it appeal to a wider audience.
