5.0 out of 5 stars Joni's Music gets the treatment it deserves 12 May 2010
By R. Muller - Published on
Much, much more than a simple 'tribute' album or a collection of covers, Robin Adler and Mutts of the Planet inhabit the music of Joni Mitchell, spanning her early days and following through to her later work which so many others have shortchanged. Robin's expressive voice feels every word and conveys it to you perfectly, and the musicians are all brilliant in their own right, offering up a variety of musical colors. Expect some new arrangements, some expanded interpretations, and most of all, expect to be blown away because you will be. Add to that the wonderful production values and you have one of 2010's finest albums, and certainly a must-have for anyone who appreciates the genius of Joni Mitchell.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Quality Tribute 18 May 2010
By Mark Scott - Published on
Robin Adler and Mutts of the Planet have achieved a minor miracle with this fantastic collection. They have created an entire hour's worth of Joni Mitchell songs that combines originality with respect, doing full justice to the genius behind the material while expanding on it and making it into something new. Robin Adler obviously has a deep connection to this material. Somehow she performs the amazing feat of keeping the spirit of the songs intact while making them her own. And, in some instances, she achieves a level of soulful intensity that transcends the originals. She is solidly backed on 'Safari's to the Heart' by an ensemble of accomplished, top-notch musicians who also seem to know the secrets of Mitchell's mojo. They use Joni's music as a springboard to weave their own magic spells. The cd was produced by Robin's husband Dave Blackburn and the sound quality is first-rate. Dave also plays guitar on the cd, displaying remarkable skill at playing in Joni Mitchell's complex alternate tunings. The track list is a safari through Mitchell's broad catalogue. It includes familiar material from the late 60s, early 70s, and courageously delves into less well known, but more challenging songs from the albums that followed 'Court and Spark', all the way up to 1992's 'Night Ride Home'. Every track is a gem. The result is both a tribute to Joni Mitchell and a highly entertaining, provocative, challenging and original cd. If you love Joni Mitchell or if you just love good music, buy 'Safaris to the Heart' and get a good healthy dose 'of all that jazz'.
5.0 out of 5 stars For True Joni Mitchell fans 22 Sep 2010

Format:Audio CD
How do you paint another Starry, Starry, Night, man? You don't. You use a similar brush and colors, maybe, but paint your own creations. David Blackburn, wife Robin Adler, and friends known as Mutts of the Planet make Joni's better known work, Woodstock, Both Sides Now, Help Me, and her not so well known and far more challenging work such as Passion Play, Amelia, Cherokee Louise, equally their own. It helps that Dave is also both a meticulous sound engineer and guitarist leading this musical train. He is a perfectionist, always striving for the essence of the original, but never imitative. The arrangements are challenging and rewarding. Joni's devoted fans (there are many of us out there) will be thrilled. There is not a false note, no excess. Safaris to the Heart: The Songs of Joni Mitchell is an essential purchase for anyone who appreciates the complexity and genius of her music. And here's hoping this is only the first of a series from Robin Adler and the Mutts of the Planet.
