Made in Italy, this 1,250-watt machine eliminates the fuss of creating espresso and espresso drinks at home by automating the entire process. With the push of a button, the machine grinds coffee beans without burning them, tamps the ground coffee into the brew group, brews a cup of espresso, and then dumps the spent grounds into a container--all in about 30 seconds.

For creating a cappuccino or latte, there's a hot water/steam wand with a milk-frothing attachment, and there's only a 10-second delay from brewing to steaming. A button selects one or two cups, a knob adjusts cup size up to 300ml. For safety, the machine shuts off if the grinder runs out of beans or the water tank is empty (control-panel lights indicate specific problems).

The machine measures 38cm high, 33cm wide, and 33cm deep; weighs 8.6kg; rotates on a swivel base; and, with a gleaming, silver plastic exterior, looks great on the worktop.

The bean hopper holds about 350g, while the removable, transparent water tank holds 1.7 litres. The grinder adjusts from fine to coarse, and a dose adjustment controls the amount of coffee ground per serving (from 6 to 9 grams). For cleanup, parts remove easily. The machine comes with an exceptionally thorough and clear instruction booklet and video, and it carries a one-year warranty against defects.

It suffices to push a button and Saeco automatic machines instantly and completely automatically grind the coffee beans to maintain their aroma, dose the required quantity, brew the coffee and discard the grounds. Moreover, by a simple gesture it can be rapidly removed from the machine and easily cleaned. It is in fact enough to rinse it under running water, to remove all traces of dirt and coffee residues. All without using chemical additives that can alter the taste and the aroma of coffee. Thanks to this Saeco patent, the quality of the best espresso remains constant through time.

    This coffee machine is truely wonderful. Having spent the last three years playing with coffee pods, both in the UK (having to get them by mail order) and now living in Venice, it's nice to finally be able to ditch them.

    Our two pod machines finally died (one at home, the other at our church), and having spent a few years being squirted by high pressure scalding water from the enevitable leaks you tend to get from pods, we decided we needed something different, but which still made good espresso and beat going downstairs to the local pastry shop where we can get a bar made espresso for 80cents.

    This machine does everything it says on the box. You pour coffee beans in the top, a bit of water, and push a button. When the coffee needs throwing away, you get a red light and no coffee. When the water has run out, you get a slightly different red light and no coffee, when the beans have run out, yet a third slightly different red light.. The rest of the time you get a really nice, bar like espresso.

    My wife likes the ability to increase the quantity of water and make a nice American style coffee (as she is American)... And this means she no longer has to mess with the kettle and add her own hot water.

    The only drawback over the pod system is that we can't decide to have a DeCaff now. Oh well..

    Overall a really nice machine, although it's available at half this price in the supermarkets in Italy.
