4.0 out of 5 stars Good coffee, good value, 4 Jan 2009
By R. Cashmore (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The other reviewer has accurately described the process involved in making a cappucino/espresso, but I have to disagree with their conclusion.

If you want an instant cappucino, buy a Tassimo and be prepared for the decidedly average, plasticky taste. If you want a cappucino/mocha/latte/hot chocolate that tastes as good as Starbucks then you need to buy a machine like the saeco , which has a milk steamer.

My husband and I spent weeks deciding which coffee machine to buy. After trying drinks from a Tassimo, a range of Delonghi machines, this Saeco machine, and talking to a trained master Barista, we went for the Saeco and are very happy with it.

After 2 or 3 attempts, we made cappucinos, mochas and hot chocolate as good as any coffee house. The machine is very easy to use and a lot easier to clean than the grinder/ESE pod machines.

You don't have to prime the machine, but it's really no hassle to run some hot water into your drinking cup for 5 seconds! Our Barista friend recommended we do this as well to help with the coffee brewing and to warm your cup.

Another point to mention is that it is important to open the steam pipe for about 3 seconds to release any water before the steam comes out, then close the pipe. After that the milk will steam perfectly (use a stainless steel milk jug for the best results - another Barista tip we had) You do have to perfect the milk frothing process to make good cappucinos and hot chocolates. This is about practise but this would be the same with any machine with a steam pipe. A steel milk jug makes a difference and is much better than a mug. If you tilt the jug and move it round you are able to make a good froth. This is about technique rather than the machine!

To sum up, we spent a lot of time trying different machines that ranged from £75 to £250 and this one tasted the best. Our budget was around the £100 and we feel that this machine is good value.

Why only 4 stars? It would be nice if the steam button held itself down rather than you holding it for 30 seconds or so, and if the steam cycle lasted a little longer for larger amounts of milk, but these really are very minor points. Oh, and you will start to develop a coffee habit!

Hopefully this review will be helpful, but a final piece of advice if you are deciding what coffee machine to buy. Read as many reviews as you can, try as many machines as you can (The larger Currys stores have reps demonstrating most of the machines) and try to speak to a proper Barista. If you can do all this, you will be much better informed to make the right choice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for espressos - bad for cappucinos, 1 Jan 2009
By Tommo (London) - See all my reviews
I bought this for my girlfriend for Christmas and while it looks nice enough, it doesn't quite live up to my expectations. It's certainly not the hassle free -- push in a pod and press a button -- coffee I'd expected.

Every morning when you switch it on you have to go through the hassle of "priming" the machine (running water through the system), only when its finished doing that can you push in a pod and press a button -- at which point low and behold a nice little espresso appears. However if, as is the case with my girlfriend, you require a cappuccino then a great deal more hassle ensues. You duly make an espresso first, then you grab another mug and hold the steam button down for 20-30 seconds(as your espresso is getting cold) before opening the steam valve and allowing any remaning water to run out. Then you grab another cup in which you have your milk, and feed the steam into it inorder to give it some froth. The problem is that the milk never gets that frothy, and never gets that warm, but you carry on and add it to that espresso that has been getting cold and the end result is that after a couple of minutes effort you have a luke warm, half hearted, not quite frothy, cappuccino. Now if you're planning to sit down and join your partner with a cappucino then you've got another couple of minutes to endure while you prepare your own (by which time she's finished hers...)

To conclude; this machine is best left to espressos. If it's cappucinos you're after then you'll find it less hassle heading down to your local coffee shop on the corner.
