Review

A HIGHLY PROMISING DEBUT novel from Edinburgh-based Rosy Barnes, this is a refreshingly irreverent antidote to the Bridget Jones version of the search for true love. There are a lot of laughs on the way. Barnes has a sharp eye for satire, most notably when dealing with the everyday goings-on of office and suburban life. Alan's girlfriend Belinda is a hilariously gruesome creation, obsessively planning her wedding, trying to change Alan both mentally and physically and striving for success at her work, and woe betide anyone who gets in her way. Echoing PG Wodehouse, Tom Sharpe and even Douglas Adams, Sadomasochism for Accountants is a fine comic novel. The Scotsman --The Scotsman

Product Description

A highly original debut novel from a brilliant young Edinburgh writer. When thirty-eight-year-old pale and uninteresting Paula is dumped by her long-term accountant boyfriend Alan, she decides that drastic measures must be taken. Spying on Alan and his new, younger girlfriend Belinda isn t getting her anywhere and a surprise 'artistic' appearance in their flat only results in a restraining order. So Paula decides it is time to lose her boring image and spice up her sex life thanks to an ill thought out boast to Alan about her wild new horizons, she finds herself in front of the not particularly tasteful red velvet drapes of Liscious; the local S&M Club. Once inside she finds a strange kind of comfort in the support of her new friends including Luda the transvestite, Dave her adoring sidekick, Gretchen the kind hearted Dominatrix, her wannabe minion Slave Boy and the mysterious, and otherwise naked, Man in the Mask. When the group decide to pool their talents to help bring Alan and Paula back together a hilarious adventure ensues, involving love, bondage, painful misunderstandings, James Bond and an oddly eloquent tree.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comic writing at its best and most painful, 16 Feb 2009
By Leticia Agudo (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews

For anybody who gleefully came to this page or bought the book hoping to get a few tips on how to spice up their sex life or, knowing it was fiction, hoping it to be one of those stories where the seemingly mousy girl gets the man of her dreams only to shed her glasses and braces at the end to uncover a top model, you will neither get any more adventurous between the sheets or identify with the ugly duckling heroine, instead, you will fall about with laughter.

Rosy's Barnes comedy strings you by the goolies until you're in pain with laughter and wishing for her to finish the paragraph -take "the goolies" as anything sensitive and prone to pleasure from the waist down.

No character is safe from her sketch-like pen, that paints, one of top of the other, the details that make them fully blown yet fully recognisable caricatures, effacing any want for identification from the reader while delighting in recognising someone they know.

Sadomasochism for Accountants lifts off the page with such graphic intensity and unfaltering rhythm that each and every chapter develops to a hilarious end with the inevitability of a Fawlty Towers situation played by Pedro Almodovar's characters.

Truly funny books are difficult to come by and this is certainly one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and amusing, 15 Feb 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Accountant Alan ends his 8 year relationship with Paula on the grounds she is boring. Paula takes up a career as a stalker and nearly lands herself in seriously hot water in the process. Then she stumbles on a fetish club and vows to become less boring and win Alan back.

She is ably assisted in this project by various members of the club - Luda a transvestite builder and her sidekick Dave as well as dominatrix Gretchen and her acolyte Slave Boy, not to speak of the Man in the Mask - naked save for a black mask.

The attempts by this motley crew to help Paula achieve her aim are hilarious. The club and its members are well portrayed. The book is not pornography in spite of its title and subject matter, just a fascinating portrait of humanity in all its infinite variety. I found it compulsive reading and will look forward to reading this author's next book.

This is a very amusing tale with great depth and humanity. I particularly loved the S&M club - vividly and bravely drawn. Definitely one I can recommend!
