I have been a big fan of Ms. Tremain for several years [ see my reports on Sacred Country , The Swimming Pool Season ,The Colour , etc. etc. ] but have only just got round to this her first novel .
The signs of what was to come are all here : economical , interesting , well researched , authoritative writing with a fair bit of humour for good measure .
This is a sad , but not depressing tale of a lonely man . Born out of wedlock to his loving young " ma " , brought up in service , rising to butler to The Colonel and his missus . An unusual pair ; childless and all for the want of not trying . His life covers most of the last century punctuated by the two wars . While always respectable and friendly , he never manages to get close to anyone and now in old age he is quite alone apart from his old dog and his part time house keeper .
He thinks that it is his birthday , but doesn't really care . What does it matter . He must however find the key to his old room wherein he is sure lies the secrets of his past . This he does care about !
After the first few pages I was hooked . After the first chapter I really cared for this loyal , but lonely man . After finishing the book I was satisfied that I had enjoyed a fine piece of writing by one of our finest contemporary writers . A fairly short but well worthwhile book .
