Product Description

Beautiful, blonde-haired Sadie Wilson suffers abuse from her slovenly mother and lecherous father in order to protect her younger siblings from a similar fate. The neighbours avoid her parents like the plague and Sadie has no friends to turn to for help. But when Harry, the kind-hearted boy next door, sees Sadie crying because her father has lost all their money, he offers to pay her sixpence for a kiss. With coins in her pocket, Sadie goes to Paddy’s market to buy underclothes she so desperately needs and it is there that she meets Mary Ann and a lively bunch of Liverpudlian stallholders who are to be her salvation. Even though she is rescued by Mary Ann’s friends and starts a new life, Sadie’s thoughts still return to her brothers and sisters back at home. And no matter how many admirers she has, there’s a place in her heart for just one lad whose kisses she can’t seem to forget...

Sadie Was A Lady 16 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This was the first of Joan Jonker's books I read, and I could not put it down. The atmosphere of Liverpool of yesteryear simply came alive, with hard working people who though poor in life, were rich at heart and gave all they had. The atmosphere reminded of the days when doors could be left open, and a kind of innocence prevailed. There is also a darker side to the story, and it is a shame that the author did not let the reader know what happened to Sadie's siblibngs. However, my heart has never left this story, and I simply cannot forget the characters

Once again a good book from Joan Jonker, Sadie the main character in the book found life very tough, parents who didn't care for her and the poor girl was desperate to escape from them.
Once she was working on the market with all her friends, her fortunes began to change for the better.

Joan really knows how to write a good book and I'm a big fan, some of the Liverpool sayings I haven't heard before, however this is a minor point and I think the plot was good, the pace of the novel was fast, I felt I was there.
Well done Joan and all the best.

Sadie has been abused since childhood, but turns her life around after a visit to a second hand market stall and the handsome boy next door.

She then realises she is not the only one, and decides her brothers and sisters need some help too.

I won't spoil it by telling you anymore, but if you read this book you won't put it down for food, sleep or emergencies so be warned!
