Why the hell has practically no one heard of them?!,
This review is from: Sad Days (Audio CD)
This is a great albumn, and while I'm sure anyone who loves PJHarvey/Patti Smith will enjoy it, Alice Texas have their own unique sound. It is a strange, deep-south american mix of rock and blues, with incredible richness of lyrical imagery. It calls to mind blistering heat and scorching summer skies, bitter-sweet with broken love. 'Xs For Eyes' and 'Trampis Haire' are my personal favourite tracks, but they're all brilliant.

Beautifully Sad Music,
By A. Thompson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sad Days (Audio CD)
If you've ever had the chance to hear Alice Texas in person the goosebumps will come rushing back the moment this CD begins playing. From the first few notes of "South of Heaven," Alice plants her feet firmly in front of you and won't let you pass until the both of you have carved your hearts out and served them to each other on antique silver platters. She gives as much of herself as she demands with an uncommon honesty in her voice that few of her contemporaries can muster up. The title track, "Sad Days," is a winding, building masterpiece that showcases both Alice's singing and song-writing talents. The overall effect of listening to this CD can only be likened to reading an intense novel. You are literally taken away to another place where a pure heart is breaking for the first time in a one room apartment above a faded general store sign that swings in the wind on a dusty street where a lone stray dog scratches around for his next meal.

Penetrating and Hypnotic,
By David J. Hogan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sad Days (Audio CD)
The second CD from Alice Texas--led by New York writer-singer Alice Schneider--offers superior alt-country ruminations on hurt and loss, propelled by Schneider's intriguingly skewed lyrics and her voice, which reminds me of Syd Straw, Aimee Mann, and other too-good-to-be-mainstream vocalists. But Schneider's pipes are unique; she can be reflective and lulling one moment, and furiously urgent the next. Accompanied by a tight, imaginative band (which Schneider wishes, it seems, to remain in her shadow), the singer has the stuff to be a breakout success. She's been playing out in NYC, and one hopes that she'll eventually appear farther afield. The first Alice Texas CD, 1999's Gold, was a starting point only. Schneider has evolved tremendously in the interim, and the real gold is here, on Sad Days.
