Tora is an Obstetrician who has moved to the Shetland Islands with her husband Duncan Guthrie, who was born on Unst. Her Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ken Gifford and Tora's husband immediately appear to have some unresolved rivalries and there are early warning signs of an attraction between Tora and Ken.
Then, when digging a hole to bury a much loved horse on her own land, Tora finds a dead body - one which appears to have had its heart cut out. This discovery is the catalyst for a bizarre tale revealing the potency of myth endemic to this remote area of Scotland.
Urgently fast-paced and increasingly compelling, this well-written thriller combines sexual tension and bloody deeds with the history of a strange cult, all of whose members are male. In unravelling the mystery, Tora, along with the talented young DS Dana Tulloch and her girlfriend Helen (a much higher ranking police officer) are embroiled in a darkly imaginative and visceral plot. Not even husbands and doctors can be trusted. Go on, you know you want to - suspend your disbelief!
The plot rears up and savages your good-will around halfway through for anyone alert enough to read the clues. Strangely, though, one still wants to see this thing through to its devastating conclusion. S J Bolton is a marvellous find.
