Darkly imaginative and visceral,

This review is from: Sacrifice (Paperback)
Tora is an Obstetrician who has moved to the Shetland Islands with her husband Duncan Guthrie, who was born on Unst. Her Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ken Gifford and Tora's husband immediately appear to have some unresolved rivalries and there are early warning signs of an attraction between Tora and Ken.
Then, when digging a hole to bury a much loved horse on her own land, Tora finds a dead body - one which appears to have had its heart cut out. This discovery is the catalyst for a bizarre tale revealing the potency of myth endemic to this remote area of Scotland. Urgently fast-paced and increasingly compelling, this well-written thriller combines sexual tension and bloody deeds with the history of a strange cult, all of whose members are male. In unravelling the mystery, Tora, along with the talented young DS Dana Tulloch and her girlfriend Helen (a much higher ranking police officer) are embroiled in a darkly imaginative and visceral plot. Not even husbands and doctors can be trusted. Go on, you know you want to - suspend your disbelief! The plot rears up and savages your good-will around halfway through for anyone alert enough to read the clues. Strangely, though, one still wants to see this thing through to its devastating conclusion. S J Bolton is a marvellous find.

Fabulous,

This review is from: Sacrifice (Hardcover)
Both gripping and gruesome, `Sacrifice' is a definite page-turner, that is certain to keep you on your toes. When I first started reading it I wasn't sure that I'd get far with it, the writing was different to those I had read recently. However within a few chapters I was hooked and racing along with the narrative. Tora Hamilton took me a little while to warm to, perhaps this is why I was unsure at the start but I soon became caught up with her life.
The chapters are just the right length to allow you to read a few but feel like you've had a good read, on the other hand if you are like me you'll read this in a few chunks because you've become caught up with the cliff hangers and need to know more! The plot revolves around a discovery Tora makes in the fields on her property. She's found (as can be read on the DJ so no spoilers) the body of young woman that has been perfectly preserved but with a hole in her chest where her heart has been removed, rather brutally as you'll discover. Within a real time frame of only a few days, a week at the most, Tora makes many more gruesome discoveries along the way including who to trust. All her revelations are connected to Shetland legends and ancient runes with Tora needing to be out of the picture once and for all. Some will know who's involved and who isn't; I couldn't be sure and became sucked into the web of deceit surrounding Tora. From an uncertain start to a chilling end, this debut is tremendous. An author I will certainly look out for in the future.

Loved this book. Got gripped immediately and had to read until I had finished. Found it refreshing - well written and the characters well drawn plus a few twists. Brilliant escapism at it's best.
