Book Description

29 Jun 2000
This text examines the phenomenon of pilgrimage through a series of six journeys to Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela, Medjugorje, Varanasi, India, Mecca, and to the revered sites of Northern India. Each of the six pilgramages is in its own way vital to an understanding of the religion which inspired it; there are also common threads between them. In addition to exploring the history, the physical and architectural landscape, the culture, and the peculiar rituals and articles of faith of each pilgrimage, this text also reveals the spirit and emotions which they engender.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written, Beautiful Book. 17 July 2001
I read this books cover to cover in 3 days. Every avaliable moment I could grab I read more, it really is a great book. The author travels across well and lesser known pilgrim trails giving an account of his experiences along the way. The author is less of a sceptic than the blurb would have you believe. A man who spends weeks reading religious texts and praying for hours at time can hardly be called sceptic where the subject of God is concerned, but then a man more detached from the religious experience would never have written such a heart lifting book. If ever you wanted to grab a backpack, a few pounds and set off to the holy land, it will be after reading this book. Not because all of Shrady's experiences are great, some are terrifying, but because the author appears to have come closer to God through his travels than ever before. Though the book may come to the ultimate conclusion that one finds God not in relic or in a temple, but in ones own heart, Shrady's journey as a pilgrim leads him to that conclusion. Perhaps the physicl journey was as significant as the metaphysical one. Please read this book, both as a travel companion and as a handbook to lift your soul :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting 28 July 2000

Good book providing both travel and spiritual insights. Very easy to read. However, a map with the locations mentioned throughout would have helped to follow the author's trail much better.
