Product Description

In the finale to series one of the Sacred Music programme, Simon Russell Beale presents a special concert for Easter from LSO St Luke's in London, performed by the award-winning choir The Sixteen, conducted by founder Harry Christophers. The music takes us on a journey of over a thousand years, from haunting plainchant through to the celebrated music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Highlights include Palestrina's motet Assumpta Est Maria, and Allegri's Miserere.

Splendid-BUT 15 Jan 2011

Glorious music, splendidly performed and presented. But take care before you buy-my copy is in NTSC system, not PAL. Make sure your set-up can play it before you spend the money.

fine offering from the sixteen 5 Aug 2010

This concert DVD is a great companion to the BBC Sacred Music series, which was also hosted by Simon Russell Beale. You only hear excerpts from these great works on the series, so it's gratifying to hear them in their entirety on this DVD. Under Harry Christopher's committed and superb direction, the Sixteen deliver consistently fine performances. Unlike other excellent groups such as Chanticleer, which focuses great attention on creating a seamless blend of voices, the singers in this ensemble are given more freedom to sing with their individual timbre, voice coloring and vibrato, and the result is a textured and organic sound, which brings a sense of realism without artifice or calculation to their material. This concert is a worthy addition to the library of anyone who enjoys sacred choral music.

A Novice's Review 15 May 2011
By William V. Wishard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
I am no expert in music, especially sixteenth century music. I only know what "reaches me" in the way of music. AN EASTER CELEBRATION reaches the inner depths. This is not for you if you want something light and superficial. But if you want something sublime, something that touches the depths of the soul, no music I have ever heard does that better than AN EASTER CELEBRATON. It is sung to perfection by The Sixteen. This is not "religious" music, although it was composed and first sung by church choirs in such places as St. Peter's Cathederal. But AN EASTER CELEBRATION goes beyond simple catagorization. It is of another dimension, a dimension that has no name. It only "is."
