I Recommend "The Sacred Eyes of Time", 6 April 2006
This review is from: The Sacred Eyes of Time: Book One in the Trilogy of Nethertime (Paperback)
My childhood fascination with Ancient Egypt grew into a scholarly obsession as I matured. Nevertheless, I still appreciate modern artists' interpretations of ancient themes, and literary works of fiction. I have high expectations; Turneramon's "The Sacred Eyes of Time" does not disappoint. It is well researched, well paced and truly imaginative.
Set in the real world of late 20th century Upper Egypt and an imaginary place called "Nethertime," it is a clever blend of fact and fantasy. The author obviously made the best use of his years in Luxor familiarizing himself with the local landscape's modern and ancient features, and scholarly volumes at hand in the research library at Chicago House.
Jock Slater, the main character (and seemingly Turneramon's alter ego), experiences an adventure like no other. He is part tragic hero, part modern-day swashbuckler; his love of "arak" and his obsession to paint the penultimate picture land him in a setting that no amount of canvas could ever capture. It's understandable why the author laid down his brush momentarily and reached for a pen!
Turneramon's descriptions of places, real and imaginary, are so vivid that I find myself repeatedly transported into that other Nethertime dimension. Every detail is laid out before the reader's eyes; Jock will sweep you into the scene before you realize what's happened.
The book is a confluence of the author's rich imagination, clever wit, dry humor, and expansive vocabulary; he's sent me to the dictionary on several occasions. It's quite extraordinary and I expect the remaining books will be, too.
I highly recommend "The Sacred Eyes of Time." It's unique, engaging, and entertaining.
