Product Description

Product Description

Acclaimed photographer and anthropologist Martin Gray spent the last 20 years on an amazing pilgrimage: he visited 1,000 sacred sites in 80 countries around the world. His journey unfolds in a remarkable compilation of images that reveals just how devoutly pre-industrial cultures everywhere worshipped and respected our Earth. From the Western Wall to the Great Mosque of Damascus, Mt. Olympus to Assisi, Tibets Potala Palace to Hawaiis Mauna Kea, Teotihuacán in Mexico to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, these are the awe-inspiring places from which all the worlds great religions sprang, along with our finest culture, art, and architecture. Grays stunning photographs and fascinating text provide unique insight into why these powerful holy places are the most venerated and visited sites on the entire planet. Maps adapted from the National Geographic Society show the locations of all the sites presented, and a thorough appendix includes a comprehensive list of over 500 of the worlds sacred sites

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the long wait....., 19 Jan 2008
By P. Trimble "Pamela Trimble" (Zurich, Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I heard Martin lecture in the Azores several years ago and since that day I have waited eagerly for his book to be published. The wait has been worth it - the book is beautiful and each one of the photographs represents Martin's extraordinary sentitivity, not only to what he sees as a gifted photographer, but perhaps more importantly his deep response to what he experiences at each location. Often Martin spends days or even weeks living at the location to find just the right expression the location conveys - usually supported by nature herself - as if she wishes to bring just the right light or mood to the photo. This is a wonderful and important book that should not be missed but be an integral part of everyone's library. Anyone who loves our planet and man's expression of the sacred will love this book. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent coffee table book, 9 Jun 2009
The short review: an excellent coffee table book with beautiful, often breath-taking pictures of over 200 sacred places, many of them churches/mosques/temples - as my main interest is the B.C. era, however, I am still looking for an equivalent book covering only very ancient places. Possibly unfairly - but the rating system is meant to be subjective - I am docking 1 star because, to me, both the title and a foreword by Graham Hancock imply that the book will be about power points (for example: Ayres Rock) and perhaps also prehistoric sites, not buildings within historic times.

The long review: Most photographs are of very well known sites: many are places of worship, others power points. The photographs are a feast and accompanied by fascinating glimpses into the history and mythology of the people living in that region.

The first section deals with pictures of sites in Europe, starting with Stonehenge and other megalithic monuments and similarly mystical sites in the UK and Western Europe, then major pilgrimage centers such as the Cathedral of Compostela, the Church of La Magdalena, and Avila in Spain, Mont St. Michel, Notre Dame, Our Lady of Lourdes in France and our lady of Fatima in Portugal as well as less known holy shrines and monuments in Continental Europe and Grecian influences.

The second section takes up the Middle East and North Africa, starting from remnants of Grecian and Christian ruins including Turkey, Jerusalem, Mecca and Medina. Mount Olympus, Sufi shrines in Iran, Ancient Egyptian buildings plus other sacred sites from Ethiopia, Tunisia, Mali and Morocco.

The next section begins with Hindu sacred sites of the Indian subcontinent, then Buddhist shrines, the Bagan Temple complex, Bali, Myanmar and Thai temples, Angkor Wat and mountain temple shrines in China. Finally some Japanese temples and sites in Lhasa, Kathmandu, Tibet and Nepal. From Australia, there are only pictures of the Ayres Rock from different angles.

The section on South America includes Easter Island, Chile, Lake Titicaca, Bolivia, Machu Pichu, Ecuador and Colombia. The last section covers Mexico, North America and Hawaii.
