Dave Gilpin or Marmite?
I hate Marmite, but Dave Gilpin is simply an acquired taste. I had the privilege of meeting Dave when he was first church planting in Sheffield and it is amazing to see what he has established as God has helped him. The fruit of his work does rather justify his stance in writing books that help church leaders (in particular) to do a better job and avoid pitfalls that he has experienced himself.
This short book talks about the elephant - you know - the one that has been in the room for a long time but everyone ignores. This is of course Dave all over- he tends to grasp nettles and talk about issues that are often glossed over. In an effort to debunk and disarm spiritual myths, Dave is clearly speaking about matters he has dealt with and areas that still vex him from time to time.
He has a clear passion for the purity of the gospel and the powerful word of God but a sincere hatred of our religious behaviour that gets in the way of reaching kingdom goals.
I was particularly blessed by his comments about the phrase "move of God" - in that we are usually waiting for God to move, but most of the time God is waiting for us. Is revival something we are waiting for God to do, or is it something we live in because of our decision and passionate following of the Lord Jesus?
"The myth of you shall not fail" and "the myth of holiness" were perhaps the chapters that I found the most refreshing, where a Pastor who would by most people be classified as successful invites us to use an alternative measuring stick and get back to basics.
The book refers to him as the smiling assassin. You must read it to see why.
I like that name!
In summary, a quick read, that will give you some good ideas, challenge your mindset and empower you to do even better than you are doing now.
It doesn't make bold claims, but it will probably do you more good than a lot of books you have read recently, especially if you are committed to your local church.
