Product Description

Product Description

Take a look at this enthralling glimpse into the word of architectural symbolism. This book is a vivid, richly illustrated exploration of the symbolism and significance of sacred architectural forms - from spires and minarets to pyramids and temples - and of how different cultures translate their complex beliefs into physical structures. In an authoritative and thoroughly accessible text, the authors explain the links between cosmologies and the construction of buildings, and describe the activities of worship, sacrifice and performance within sacred spaces. The focus ranges widely to show a representative selection of the world's most fascinating sacred buildings, from prehistoric stone circles and Buddhist temples to European cathedrals and New Guinea meeting-houses. The reference section at the back of the book explains the construction techniques behind sacred architecture and analyzes essential forms such as arches, vaults and domes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 6 Mar 2008
By Prashant Arora "Arcant" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sacred Architecture (Paperback)
Being an architect, I didn't think twice before buying this book and I am glad I didn't. The paper quality and printing alone are worth the price and anything beyond that is pure joy.

This book works at many levels for those who have always sought meaning behind the relation between religion and astronomy and their translation into architecture. Besides exploring physical elements like geography, color, texture, material, the book also deals with space, smell, sound and realms.

It voices the need of humans to connect with the divine and is a rich tribute to the ancient cultures of the world. It explores the practice of religion and significance attached to symbols, and very candidly explain the need for the preservation of beliefs for posterity through the use of a common language called architecture.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very informative book, 12 July 2010
By Suresh Hathiwala - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sacred Architecture (Paperback)
I had read sections of this book during my recent trip to India, and upon my return, I had to order my own copy. The book is remarkably well organized, and the chapters are quite concise, with "boxed" information, and illustrative photographs. It is more of a coffee-table book in a handbook/paperback size.
