About the Artist
16 Horsepower were a Denver-based alternative country band that revolved around the unique songwriting and singing of David Eugene Edwards. The band made its name with music that combined rural backwoods kitsch with edgy, off-kilter country-rock. 'Sackcloth 'n' Ashes' is their first full length album and was originally released in 1996. Driven by fiddles, a bizarre sense of humor and punk-inflected country-rock, Sackcloth 'n' Ashes is a weirdly captivating listen. Nearly every song is a strange, backwoods fable, delivered with clever irony that never undercuts the essential, disturbing intentions of the songs. It's not for everybody, but for alt-country fans 'Sackcloth 'n' Ashes' is a must have. Music On Vinyl thought it was about time to release this record on vinyl, which comes with a lyric sheet.

If your image of country & western music is Billy ray cyrus & Garth Brooks then think again. This band do the country think with a drasticly dark gothic twist, it feels like the whole thing was recorded in sepia.. brooding & resonating with evil. all the instruments seems to be 19th century or early 20th. Its full of wrong doings and penetance. Imagine a band who played music like the theme to a Sergio Leone spaghetti western, but 16 times darker.

I stumbled across 16 Horsepower as a result of watching Jim White's Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus. On this Southern movie is a short, enigmatic, version of Black Soul Choir. So, I bought the LP which has the full length version, and am very pleased I did so. It is astonishing, compelling, foreboding and just teetering on the edge of violence. The whole LP is shot through with Southern Gothic, even though the band came from Denver, Colorado. The production is superb, and the musicianship exemplary. This is an outstanding LP for anyone who enjoys the dark rumours of the night.

Dark rock with a dose of Old-Timey banjo and wheezing atmospheric squeezbox. I'm awestruck by this album. It has attitude, tradition and spookyness. The drumming is full of fabulous fills. Some of the vocals (intentionally) have a smoky distant muffled sound - but it's all just exactly right.
Is it country? Well, yes. But not like you ever heard before.
Is it rock. Yeah. A bit rustic, not urban.
Is this their best album? Well, either this one, or "Hoarse".
