Saab 99 and 900 is a detailed account of the cars that came from Saab, the aeroplane maker, whose first car - the 92 model - set the standard for advanced design epitomized by the 99 and 900 cars. The author delves deep into the cars' design and history, and into the core Saab values that they carried into production. Topics include: detailed design history of the 99 and 900; year-by-year developments; technically detailed engineering overviews; detailed specifications; advice on owning and buying and, finally, coverage of rallying and special models.

Lance Cole has written for all the major motoring and aviation magazines since 1983 when he was awarded the Sir Williams Lyons Award. He has penned regular columns for national newspapers including The Daily Telegraph and South China Morning Post. Previous books include Vickers VC10 [Crowood 2000].
What a superb book this is, it covers in great detail all the facts, figures and trivia about these two fantastic makes of cars. Complemented by a stunning array of colour photographs. Being a Saab nut I would be byast, but I still think this book would apeal to pretty much any car enthusiast.
The history of the Saab 99 and 900 models spans some quarter of a century and with just a few tens of thousand short of the magic million - the 900, with its 99 predecessor, is particularly important in the history of the Swedish auto maker.
Lance Cole seeks to record the year on year development of the 99 and 900 against a detailed design history of all things that define "Saabness". With a selection of photographs, design sketches and illustrations, the author covers the model history in a comfortable level of detail. You can not really fault him for the reference to "Aero" alloys as "Super Incas" nor the misspelling of the name of world's first superstar rally driver, Erik Carlsson, since these are minor inaccuracies in an otherwise fantastic source of information and Saab history.
In addition to this history, the author provides some detailed model specifications, information on technical engineering developments and coverage of rally and special models. You may find the same information in other publications but not all in the same book nor in a way that brings all the information together with such an enthusiasm for the cars that shines through in the author's writings.
It is easy to pick up this title and flick through for specific pieces of information as and when required, just as it is easy to read from cover to cover. With advice on buying and owning these up and coming classics, this really is a book that you will come back to. An essential addition to any Saab owner's bookshelf.
I had high hopes for this... having just bought a decomposing Saab, and believing that The Complete Story would represent a guiding light through its quirks and more characterful moments (and for when the Haynes manual was just too bewildering). As such, it's not *bad*... but it's a bit meagre, content-wise. When you take out the (abundant) photos, you're down to less than 70 pages (quite small, wide-margined, double columned) of actual text. Within this, there's not masses of info that doesn't exist in the public domain... while the buyers' guide is simply too generalised to be of any real help at all.
When this was first published, when t'internet was in its (relative) infancy, I reckon it would've made a lot more sense. Now, when it's possible to find much of its contents online, the case isn't quite so clear cut. It'll look nice on your upmarket Scandinavian coffee table, mind.
