The main problem I found is that I didn't order the 8 camera system! The system arrived very quickly. I removed the cover and installed the hard drive, cable and drive screws were provided.

After half an hour of unwrapping the cables I plugged them into the power converter along with the cameras and DVR. Using the mouse right clicking the screen takes you into the menu. Pressing the manual record button sets it to record immediately. NB Record by sensor does not appear work but motion detection does.

The Quick set up guide and a little help from the internet to set up port 8888 enabled me to view the cameras via my mobile phone. My dynamic IP address changes, this is supported in the network settings by using one of the supported dynamic IP websites. This remote connection has failed twice in the past two weeks but rebooting the box and resetting seems to resolve this.

Cameras are not bad but colours are a little washed out especially in bright sunlight. Night vision covers the 15 or so meters as long as the light is not reflected off the spiders and close obstructions. Birds and rain affect the motion detection. The email alert can be set on camera motion. This will be triggered by the night vision swapping to B/W but this can be set by the scheduled times. Sometimes the menus can be a little frustrating especially typing all the emails with the mouse. The internet settings do not always refresh correctly.

Easy to set up and the software built in is easy to use. Quality is very good. The graphic display of recording is very helpful meaning you can skip to the parts that have been recorded. This is great for the money.

Build quality - nice looking - only one audio input though (although this does not represent a problem for me, personally)

Installing hard drive - no more difficult than any external hard drive I have ever done and once formatted, worked fine.

Cameras - great. I get the impression that the IR illumination was meant for a slightly narrower lens because the middle of the view is lit better with the IR. Colour is fine, quality is commensurate with shop CCTV.

Software
- Network setup - FTP and SMTP work fine, works over wired and wireless okay (Samsung S4 and wired Windows machines) - using static IP addresses
- Recording - can record at certain times of day (set differently for each channel if required) and can set to record if motion detected. Noted that whilst set 4fps for normal recording, it will run at a lot more (30fps??) when recording on motion detect (MD) and you can use more HDD space by selecting MD recording than if you just record continuously, if you have a lot of MD events. Also, you can block out areas of the screen from recording, such as if they overlook areas you don't want to record.
- Motion Detect - set the greyed areas to be where you are detecting motion. Very easy. can send out email, upload images via ftp, sound an alarm if the MD is triggered.
- Encode each channel differently if required. As far as I can make out, all the channels are the same and will record at D1, HD1 and CIF in the main stream (what goes on the screen and your HDD) and CIF and QCIF on the sub stream (what goes out over the network live to devices). You can set the fps and constant or variable bit-rates at various qualities to optimise the quality and HDD usage.

Can i just start by saying hats off to the seller, ordered Saturday evening, arrived on tuesday even though the expected delivery was thursday to the following monday! super impressed to begin with!

i purchased the WD 1TB 3.5 inch Internal Hard Drive - Caviar Blue additionally as the DVR does not have a hard drive (hence the low price) the installation was easy, undo a few screws with your standard philips screw driver, plug in the power and data cables into the hard drive, and screw to the base of the DVR with the supplied screws, couldn't be simpler! (i will update when the hard drive is full and starts writing over old data to give an idea of how many days/weeks of continuous footage 1tb will hold)

The most difficult part of the installation process of this system is deciding where to place the cameras, but they are incredibly adaptable, wall plugs and screws are suppled to fit them almost anywhere. I have all 4 cameras installed with plans to expand in future as this is an 8 channel DVR! two cameras are placed at the rear of my house overlooking the garden and rear entrance, another on the front of the building overlooking the drive and the final camera in the hallway monitoring who's coming in and out.

Once you've decided where the cameras are going fixed them in hooked them up and hidden the cables its a breeze, hit record and sit back and relax knowing if some troublesome chav jumps over your fence and tries to burgle you again you won't have to chase him down the street to catch a glimpse of his face!
