This is an excellent guide produced in an encyclopedia format, with recommendations. You can look up a wine name, a grape, a producer etc. There are also helpful cross references. There is quite a comprehensive guide to which wines are suited to which foods, listed by food. Finally, new this year, is the complete list of award winners from this years International Wine Challenge.

2.0 out of 5 stars Out of Date 9 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback
As all DK books, this is glossy, well written and interesting. The range of wines reviewed is useful and up-to-date.

BUT it is marketed as a reliable method of selecting and finding wines, which it is not. I selected a wine of interest and referred to the stockists' codes - but only 2 out of the 5 stockists exist in the stockists' directory. The other codes were redundant. This pattern followed on many of my choices. Is the section just out of date? or did they miss out a large number of stockists? Whichever, it defeated the purpose of the book from my point of view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good reference/overview on wines, wineries and varietals. 23 Jun 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent reference book for either someone starting to enjoy wine or the more experienced wine drinker. It contains very good food / wine recommendations, wine ratings, winery ratings, wine definitions, and an overview of the wine growing regions of the world. Very comprehensive for a small book you can carry with you. It is well worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Maximum Info in a Quick Reference 24 Sep 2001
By "1king" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I have the 2000 version, just ordered the 2002 version. An excellent reference book for quick checks and general info. Contains more info than most, if not all wine books I have read/purchased. Just plain handy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very useful book for me, a beginer drinker. 6 Aug 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
As an absolute beginner, I like this book. It's straightforward, easy to understand. It's not pretentious as some other wine books. The most part I like about this book is that the every pronunciation of the wines and grapes are spelled out. It's very useful for someone like who doesn't know French or Italian. I wish it were on tape as well.
