Before purchasing this unit I read several reviews. Basically if your using this to play movies in different formats (AVI, MKV, MP4 ect) then you will need to update the firmware before use.

Take a USB flash drive and format to FAT32
Go onto Sumvisions website and search for this product. On their page is a download link for the firmware. Download it and extract the ZIP file
Copy the extracted zip file to your USB flash drive
Connect the unit, power on and connect the USB flash drive to the unit
In the on screen menu navigate to your USB flash drive (under USB in the menu)
Highlight the firmware file and choose to install/upgrade
The box will restart, after this you all set to go

Note - out of the box without the firmware update you can play AVI, MPEG, WMA, DIVX without issue. You will not be able to play some MKV and MP4's without the firmware update.

Unit does have a small remote control but its manageable. The unit itself is small and lightweight. It does not come with HDMI cable though so you will need to purchase. If you will use the supplied AV cables then I would suggest you get an AV to scart adapter for ease of use. Full 1080P is supported, and nice clear picture over HDMI to. Pleased with this product and easy to transport around as a mini media center.

Gets 4 stars only because of the required firmware update (if it was not for the previous 2 helpful reviews this could have been a frustrating experience) and the smallish remote control.

Tiny little device, about double the size of a cigarette box, with a solid metal case. No provided HDMI cable, but AV cable gives good results whilst I wait for my HDMI cable to arrive. Remote could do with being a bit bigger, but it works well. Using a Mac with Handbrake/libdvdcss.2/VLC to rip DVDs to the drive is very simple, using H.264 to give excellent pictures. Easy to navigate menus. You do have to reformat the drive to FAT32, and update the firmware, but the firmware updates are found on the company website - the provided instructions are poor with regards to this so thank you to the below review. Bought mainly to put all the kids DVDs on a hard drive to prevent them from being destroyed with all their handling and it works brilliantly so far. I also have the Sumvision Cyclone Micro 3 which is also fantastic, and will use this, along with a USB flash drive, for holidays etc.

I wanted this to play DVD ISO files but I couldn't get any to play on this, the best it would do was browse the iso and play the vobs but who want to be doing that. Anyway, I ended up creating uncompressed MKV files and these wouldn't play. This was because the firmware was 2 versions out of date. I downloaded the firmware from
[...] The instructions were a bit basic. What it didn't tell you was that you can only use a usb memory stick to apply the firmware, and it also has to be formatted as FAT32. Once I did that it found the file and updated. The MKV files played fine except there was jitter and tearing which was because I was playing back at 60hz and not 50hz, once I switched it played fine. My trivial complaints would be that the remote is very tiny and its hard to see the button text, and I can't seem to turn of the blue light even when powered off.

I have no problem with the suppliers of this unit- they refunded me quickly, The unit was a disaster. Things started badly when the unit rattled on arrival- the hard drive was loose and for reasons not explained in the instructions, a set of screws were supplied to secure it. Although the HDD functioned with my PC, the unit would not even recognise its own internal hard drive! When a USB drive was installed, it would only play a few seconds of content before returning to the memory.

Iv'e replaced this unit with a WD TV Live. This is better but not perfect.

After a poor start from my understanding of the product, the player is actually very good. The seller is very helpful and assisted me where and when necessary and in a timely manner. Points to note is that you have to remove the power cord when attaching the unit to your pc and loading files. The drive is USB 2.0 but i'm told the HDD interface is SATA 1 by the seller so it is quite slow on transfer of data to the drive but fine on playing it. I went for this product as it states it can be upgraded to a 2TB drive later. The GUI is really good however the remote is quite small and does not work over much of a distance over a meter. Overall if it had faster interface and could load files quicker and the remote worked better it would be 5 star from me. With regards to the price, I don't think you will find better for your money and it is nice and small for travel etc. The picture upscaling is great even with older movies of poor quality. I would recommend this product and this seller.
