enjoyable inspirational historical romance 10 Oct 2010
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
In 1881 with the deaths of their parents, Jenny Higgins takes charge of her two younger sisters Brenda and Mary Lou. Her plan is to find suitable husbands for both. Though in her early twenties, Jenny wants no mate for herself.

When she learns Rocky Creek, Texas is filled with eligible bachelors, she and her siblings arrive looking for two spouses. Jenny puts up wanted: husband flyers throughout the town. She interrogates candidates, but finds no one who comes close to meeting her spousal criteria. Meanwhile Marshal Rhett Armstrong is attracted to Jenny and plans to be there when her plans implode, but also has mental scars from his war days. Jenny is falling in love with the law man, but stubbornly rejects her heart as Rhett fails to meet her husband measurement criteria.

The second Rocky Creek historical romance (see A Lady Like Sarah) is an enjoyable inspirational frolic as readers will root for obstinate Jenny whose two track mind is finding two husbands and no more while her siblings seek to find their own spouses. Filled with humor and pathos, with Rhett seeking redemption knowing God forgave him but he has not forgave himself, readers will enjoy this warn inspirational Americana.

"A Suitor for Jenny" By Margaret Brownley 4 Nov 2010
By Andrew Demoline - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Thanks to booksneeze for the book to review, and an especially HUGE thank you to Kristina for reading and reviewing this book which was sent to me by mistake!

A Suitor For Jenny tells the story of Jenny and her two sisters. When her parents die, Jenny takes her two sisters to Rocky Creek for a new beginning. Not only, Rocky Creek is known as a place with many eligible bachelors. Perfect for Jenny to find husbands for her two sisters. Of course, as Jenny seeks proper matches for her sisters, nothing turns out the way she hopes or plans.

This was an enjoyable book. As a woman with two younger sisters, it did hit a chord in my own personal experience. It explores several important themes, most notably the issue of controlling our own lives versus allowing God control and resting in His peace. The other big one was exploring grief and guilt and how these can separate us from God if we let them. As a story, it was heart warming and cute, and contained interesting historical details. One criticism is that either by intent, or by accident, the plot of the book is obvious from the beginning. No surprises here, but sometimes thats OK. As a side note, I also enjoyed how Brownley mixed in the etiquette rules of the time surrounding marriage.

Conclusion: 3.5 Stars. Conditionally recommended (you need to like the genre of historical romance). Definitely for women.

Historical Fiction 8 Nov 2010
By T R - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A Suitor for Jenny written by Margaret Brownley, is a love story set in the old west town of Rocky Creek. Jenny Higgins is the oldest sister of three girls and because of a rough past, feels responsible for the future of her younger sisters. She has devised a plan to get her sisters married to men who will be the best possible husbands.

A Suitor for Jenny is another story of how God's plan works best for us even when we can't imagine anything other than our Plan A. The book is very entertaining and leads us through several amusing mishaps that just may have reminded me of a few "courting" stories of my own.

I wouldn't have thought that I would enjoy a historical novel as much as I did this one. In fact, because it is a book in a series, I will seek to read the other books, too.

The book is very well written and gives good advice without being "preachy". I would encourage anyone who is in the mood for a quick entertaining read to purchase this book and others in the series, as well.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion of the book.
