This book was recommended by an astronomer friend and I have found it to be a very good introduction to astronomy. I knew very little about astronomy, but this book covers all the basics in a manner that is easy to understand, but with sufficient detail to raise it above many beginners guides. (This book is also published as The Practical Astronomer - they are exactly the same book, but this edition was produced for The Book People, which is why it has a different name.)

The photos are superb and the illustrations are detailed and helpful. This is a very useful book for anyone interested in astronomy and it gets you into the practical aspects of looking at the night sky and understanding what you see and how to find objects very easily.

Very good I find the Star Hopping charts very useful and there are lots of nice pictures to druel over as well as good imho telescope buying advice and observational advice waterproof trousers and fingerless gloves must get some. I also have Turn left at Orion and a couple of pocket size Phillips guides the Star hop charts to find constellations are not as good in them though.
