Product Description

Product Description
In SS GENERAL Sven Hassel and his diminishing band of veterans are plunged into the maelstrom of Stalingrad. Radio Moscow boasts that one German soldier dies every minute as the Germans fight their way house -by- house to the banks of the Volga. Then the Russian counter-attack leaves the German 6th Army surrounded and doomed to die. But Sven and his comrades join one of the last-ditch attempts to break out, to fight their way across the frozen steppe to freedom. Their leader: a fanatical SS General.

About the Author
Born in 1917 in Fredensborg, Denmark, Sven Hassel joined the merchant navy at the age of 14. He did his compulsory year's military service in the Danish forces in 1936 and then, facing unemployment, joined the German army. He served throughout World War II on all fronts except North Africa. Wounded eight times, he ended the war in a Russian prison camp. He wrote his first novel while being transferred between American, British and Danish prisons before making a new life for himself in Spain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide To The Horrors of War, 11 Dec 2003
Sven's writing is stupendous! First read his books whilst serving as a soldier in Germany bombing around in armoured personnel carriers with Tanks supporting us - back in the 1970's His portrayal of war is so realistic and was then easy to relate to as we played soldiers. Years later reading his books again I'm struck by his characterisation and how well developed they are as they continue to hold on to life and dish out death. The hardships that generation went through still amaze me and how an evil little Dictator could unleash such immense terror on so many people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shocking, Grizzly, Unmissable, 2 Nov 2003
I first found this book when I was a kid as an old tattered paper back in my father's book shelves and was the first of the series I read, and in my oppinion is one of the best.

As usual Hassel casts aside the the typical Hollywood views of war being a glorious heroic affair and instead shows it how it is, as a grizzly and dehumanising experience.

All the usual characters are back as they fight the Russian's at stalingrad with Porta stealing the show at regular intervals.

The battles are spectacular and are filled with tension and drama, especially their raid on a Russia bunker.

Probally one of Hassel's best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unrelenting, 14 Nov 2003

On the Russian front the enemy rarely takes prisoners, and when they do death eventually comes to most of them.Sven Hassel's novel tells of a nation drilled in obediance and to abide by rules.Heroism and dogged determination to survive are necessary qualities for the individual soldier on the battlefield.but even that is sometimes not enough.
