Book Description

3 Aug 2009 1906434255 978-1906434250
For the day-to-day DBA, there are dangers around every corner; monsters waiting to strike down the unsuspecting database with a resource-hungry query, an inefficient data load, or even outright data corruption. When the worst happens, and SQL Server is down, or performance is suffering, customers are quick to complain. During such difficult periods, you, the DBA, are the centre of attention. Suddenly, three or four people crowd your desk, laser beam focused on your every action, fully expecting you to solve the problem quickly. The success of your career as a DBA depends largely on how well-prepared you are to deal with such situations. Without verified backups, sound server documentation, and a ready supply of tried-and tested troubleshooting tools, there is no safe place to hide when the monster rears up. All you can do is buy some time, patch things up as best you can and then duck away into your cubicle, which, if you lost any data in the process, may soon be empty. However, with the tools and techniques provided in the SQL Server Tacklebox, you will be fully-equipped to fight back. Inside, you'll find scripts that will allow you to automate and standardize SQL Server installation, document and report on your servers, migrate data and manage data growth, troubleshoot performance issues, receive notifications of impending danger, secure access to your servers and fight off data corruption. In short, you'll be able to respond quickly and professionally to the many issues that blight the waking, and often sleeping, hours of the DBA. Then, one day, who knows? That cubicle may turn into an executive office with wall-to-wall tinted windows revealing a flowing brook outside, where no monsters live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful 1 Oct 2009
By Anthony R. Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a book above my current experience level. That doesn't mean it isn't useful to me.

By the time I started chapter 3 I: learned new ways to install SQL Server. I have a better understanding of the importance of seperate drives for the data & logs. Most importantly I've learned the importance of DOCUMENTATION.

I've been able to compare what I got from Forta's T-SQL in 10 to the scripts provided in the book and follow them. Do you remember when SQL, or any form of programming, was new to you and how great you felt when you were able to read somebody's code and understand it? Yeah, that rocks.

I have liked being able to take the scripts from the book and run them against my install of SQL Server 2008 Express and see the results.

The author's sense of humor helped make what could be dry material fun to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of SQL Server Tacklebox 2 Aug 2010
By Pat Byrne - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
SQL Server Tacklebox is a must have for the technical library of any DBA. I found this book both interesting and informative. It was well written with a lot of detailed information and many code samples. This book walks you through the processes of Installing and Securing SQL Server and also provides great insight into how to monitor and manage it in order to keep it running smoothly. Rodney backs up his writing with numerous real world examples that he has encountered through his work experience, including the DBA Repository. I highly recommend paying special attention to chapter 2 which covers the DBA Repository in great detail.

If had to begin discarding most of the resources in my technical library, rest assured this book would be one of the last, if not "the last" to go.

As a footnote, I've had the opportunity to hear Rodney speak on several occasions. I would highly recommend attending any of his sessions if you ever have the opportunity to hear him speak at a SQL Saturday or Code Camp. Above all, Rodney is probably about the most genuine guy that you'd ever want to meet. He has always had to time to thoroughly answer my questions or just chat about life in general.
