Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

SQL Server 7 Developer's Guide is divided equally into a database administrator's manual and a developer's primer, providing useful content for readers who are interested in both angles.

The book opens with overviews of the SQL Server database architecture and the new features of version 7. The management and security aspects of the all-important Enterprise Manager are covered in depth. The authors make very liberal use of screen shots and information tables, lending a visual look to this introduction. The first part continues with sections on replication, data warehousing, performance optimisation, and SQL-DMO--the object-oriented framework that lets you write your own management applications.

Part 2 opens with a traditional look at databases and a focus on the relational model. After introducing you to entity-relationship diagrams and a rather detailed tutorial of the SQL language, the authors present each of the various ways to access SQL Server from client applications: Microsoft Access front ends, data access objects (DAO), Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC)Direct, the ODBC API, Remote Data Objects, object linking and embedding database (OLE DB), ActiveX Data Objects, and DB-Library. The last chapter discusses Active Server Pages (ASP) development and how to integrate SQL Server databases with Web sites.

A companion CD-ROM contains all of the example code in the book and offers a centralised interface for running it. --Stephen W Plain

It just hasn't been useful. One of my colleagues has the same book and also rates it lowly. Perhaps it is intended more for administrators or developers who are developing very simple applications. It gets 2 stars because I've only attempted to refer to it 5 times (none of which the answer was forthcoming). Perhaps I've been unlucky? This book may be useful to learn about SQL Server from rather than to use as a reference.

Excellent ! It's rare to find a book covering either the DB concepts and programming. One lack of this book is it covers programming techniques such as DAO, ODBCDirect, DB-Library, Access which may be eliminated in the future.

This is an excellent book presenting an overview of the administration aspects of SQL Server 7.0. I myself am a developer and have just set up SBS 4.5 at home and am learning the intracasies of managing SQL Server 7.0 along with developing n tier Clinet/Server applications. This book is interesting to read (which I might add is rare among technical books) and holds my attention. I only wish more books were written this clear and concise. There are so many books out there which are rip off's and shouldn't even be allowed to be on the market. Hats off to the authors and the publishers for this book!!

Good Intro to SQL 7.0, but lacks depth...
Granted SQL 7.0 is a large subject to try to cover in one book, but I was hoping for a little broader coverage of the new areas, such as Data Transformation Services, etc. Read more
