Banging hundreds of laps out is essential if you are serious about improving your fitness and speed as an open water swimmer, especially in the winter (ie. indoor pool) season. But if you are on your own and not in a coached or club session, it can be mind-manglingly boring, and I find that a stream of happy house or clubby podcasts will take the edge off the tedium and keep you swimming at a speedy pace.

Hence the Arthurian quest for a waterproof MP3 player...

Out of the Splashgear Waterproof MP3 (to be reviewed at a later date), the Finis SwiMP3.1G, and the Speedo Aquabeat (all three of which I have owned and tried), the Aquabeat performs the best.

The interface for loading up MP3 is about as easy as it can be - just drag and drop. I stopped using the Speedo software that came with it - not needed, and a little quirky. It's loud enough (unlike some other players out there) and easy to operate at the pool, even when hung off your goggle strap at the back of your head. The 2GB capacity is easily enough for several sessions.

The earphones work well, unless they get wet - meaning that the buds are not correctly sealed into your ear. I found that a swimming cap worked well to keep them in, although tumble-turning occasionally changed the position of the buds in the ears and caused a bit of a leak resulting in a loss of volume.

One problem (hence only 4 stars) was that the earbuds (the large flanged christmas-tree ones worked best for me, out of the three sets supplied) sometimes came detatched from the main headphone, and were left stuck in my ear hole. Scary, but I was able to work them out with a fingernail until I was able to withdraw them with a sucking pop. If an earbud went too far in to fish out again, then I imagine medical intervention with a pair of forceps would be required. Not good.

This my second Aquabeat - the 1st "LZR" one lasted about a year before it stopped talking to my PC and died. In conclusion then, no manufacturer has got this design challenge right yet, but for me the Aquabeat is the best of the bunch. Careful about those earbuds getting wedged in auditory canals though...

At the end of the day, this does what it is meant to - plays music underwater whilst you swim! Given that most of us have wanted something like this (or underwater speakers in pools) to be invented and mass produced since we learnt to swim, and one would assume the technology isn't all that easy to perfect (I don't know why, but I would assume they'd have done it earlier if not) then you have to be pleased by the fact that you can finally listen to your favourite tunes whilst engaging in the monotony of lap-swimming. So given that I accept it does what I want it to, I'll focus on criticisms or areas of improvement which will no doubt be made in coming years...

Its a pretty basic no-frills gadget. I couple of big bulky buttons for play, stop, back, forward and volume. Thats it. No way of viewing your tracks etc (I know you can't do this whilst actually swimming, but you might want to get it to a certain place before starting etc) and I'm partly convinced it was playing mine in a random order. Putting music on it is super easy though, just drag and drop, no need to use the special software.

Its not terribly inconspicuous. Though I suppose you could opt for a black one which might help, but I did feel a bit silly with a blue box strapped to my head and certainly got some intrigued looks.

The earphones aren't very comfortable at all, which personally I found annoyed me after a while and needed the occasional stop and fiddle to make sure they were in properly and comfortable. The sound does seem a little inconsistent particularly when swimming fast or turning, as I guess its easy for the water to dislodge them. Its also far too easy to knock them with your arm whilst doing front crawl. I had initially thought it would be held in place by a swimming cap but i actually found it easier without, the elastic nature of the cap seemed to pull it out of your ears!

The sound is pretty basic, but definitely sounds much better underwater than in the dry, which is rather clever...unless you're one of those swimmers who doesn't like to get your hair wet!!

But essentially, if you're content with something basic to end the boredom of swimming and you can cope with odd looks and the occasional readjustment, then I'd say this is a good buy! After all, what choice do we have?!

Frustrating 3 Oct 2011
The 2GB version of this potentially great little piece of swimmer's kit is flawed.
I have used the 1GB version and have been generally delighted with its ease of operation
and compact size. Others have commented on the supplied speakers and if you're reading this
you should take note of other reviews. (throw them away and buy some O2s!!)
The reason I returned mine after just a couple of outings is because Speedo seem to have handed
the redesigning of the software to a bunch of children as a School project.
- The main issue is that, unlike the 1GB model this one takes several seconds to boot-up. When you
are in the water and you reach around to turn it on there is no audible sound to tell you that you
have pressed the 'on' button. Since the 'on' and 'off' buttons are next to each other and you can't
see the light this uncertainty is irritating. IF you have hit the right button there will be an almost
inaudible beep several seconds later and a millisecond before it starts to play rendering it pointless.
- This is clearly a design flaw. The smaller version has a much more audible 'double beep' that sounds
instantly so that you don't lose your rhythm whilst swimming. Why this was jettisoned in favour of
something practically useless defies understanding.
In addition the unit rather unhelpfully re-arranges your playlist for you. It groups them by Album.
I tried many different ways of shuffling and randomizing my music in Media Player before uploading and
the 'review your Synch' feature in Media Player confirms the order that it was given.. yet the Aquabeat
obligingly re-arranges everything for you. I spoke to Speedo about these issues but I might have well
asked my octogenarian mother. They said they would return my call.... unsuprisingly they didn't.
Of course I may have just been unlucky. But if you are considering buying one of these I'd advise you to
make sure it's supplied by Amazon themselves and not a third party. Look for 'completed by Amazon' - their
return procedure is a joy to use. I wish someone had told me. I had to make several calls, send off a couple
of e-mails and wait for over two weeks for my refund.
