If you are a fan of UK hip-hop but have yet to find an artist with enough raw aggression or beats with enough thump then look no further. 'Spaz the World' is a debut album from a Nottingham rapper who has a point to prove. If the war in 'Cirques des Clowns' was being won by 'a bunch of clowns' (presumably the commercial artists many of whom Cappo appears to have little time for) then this LP can be classed as something of a fightback. From the off the listener is hit with a beat that is all snares and drums demonstrating a level of rawness rarely heard in hip-hop production. Both 'Cirques des Clowns' and 'Speak' offer no let up in intensity, with Cappo hitting with hard and heartfelt lyrics which paint an unrefined picture of his passion-fed yet undoubtable ability; he himself describes his writing process "...where I'm waiting for the blind fury/to engross the page for me...".
Following such a raw opening, 'Grand Final' is a more mellow track with a Kanye West-like sample being used over a simple bassline which comes as welcome respite. The lyrical onslaught continues "I didn't creep out from the woodwork, I put in time/this isn't anything you can stop within a statement's lines..." and this is where the album excels. Cappo has a style of rapping which is unique, choosing rhyme-schemes which are unorthodox and even verge on awkward but are nonetheless highly engrossing. Again he puts it to the listener himself "I'm careful not to build my structures the same as others/my time's arriving when I've built up all the style's that's needed, it's seemless."
Combining some well-chosen samples with a set of P Brothers beats which are heavily drum-orientated, this album can almost be classed as an alternative form of hip-hop (not in the experimental sense). Most fans of commercial rap would not enjoy the intensity of this album any more than they would grasp the excellence of its lyrics, an excellence which lies in their individuality. Cappo is no Jehst, his flow is often uncomfortable and lyrics lack the metaphorical complexity, but that is not the point. Cappo is abrasive aswell as intelligent, a combination which is rarely achieved in hip-hop. Here he raps over a set of beats which could not be any more fitting for this unique combination.
Peace.
