Amazon.co.uk Review

The highest-profile online game on the PS2 is back in SOCOM II: US Navy SEALs. Although Sony have so far taken a more laid-back approach to their promotion of online games, compared to Microsoft and the Xbox, the original SOCOM nevertheless managed to become the most popular online console game ever. Bucking the trend of most video game sequels, this follow-up actually manages to improve on the original, fixing many of the niggling flaws that permeated it.

Not that SOCOM II is radically different from its prequel: far from it; it's still a squad-based combat simulator very much in the style of Rainbow Six and the legion of other Tom Clancy-inspired tactical shooters. Here though the emphasis is on user-friendly controls and teamwork with real human players. The game features proper support for clans (groups of players that regularly play together) and is much better at keeping out cheaters. There are also 12 new maps to play on, in addition to the 10 from the original game, and two new multiplayer modes that have clearly been influenced by Counter-Strike.

Sensibly, though, the developers have paid just as much attention to the single-player mode, with a complete overhaul of the graphics and increased voice support that allows you to bark commands at your computer-controlled team mates (as long as you've got a USB headset) instead of mucking about with the ( still very good) menu system. All of this makes SCOCOM II the perfect way to get into online gaming. --David Jenkins

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding game but not without faults 15 Mar. 2004
Having played the excellent first Socom for the last six months I was expecting something amazing for the second, and I wasn't disappointed. The graphics, sound and effects are awesome and the online gameplay has to be the best in ANY game, although the offline game does have a few drawbacks which is why I gave it four stars. It's sometimes difficult to get out of an enclosed room when your team are following you as they don't move out of your way (which they are supposed to according to the manual) and they seem to have 'borrowed' the cutscene dialogues from 'No-one Lives Forever' but without the humour!
Apart from those little niggles I think the game is great and look forward to playing it constantly until Socom 3 comes out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!! 28 April 2005
Verified Purchase
Socom was great online but Socom 2- woah!!
Brilliant especially with the headset!! I would recommend this game to anyone, better weapons then socom 1, better graphics everything!
They have even updated some of the old levels of socom 1 in online play and they are so much better.
Definitely worth the money!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mint 16 Dec. 2004
I've had a playstation for ages and this is by far the most addictive, fun and generally amazing game i've played on. In my opinion it is more entertaining and challenging than all the GTA's. A great feature for this game is the headset (which can be purchased with the game) which really involves you in the action. Even if you do not have the ability to go online and play this it is still a fantastic game which has the potential to emulsify you for months. Like any other challenging game, you are likely to get frustrated at times. But if a games not challenging, it's no fun. Playing online is also great, you can play aginst friends and if you have headsets, hear them moan in annoyance as you thrash them. A must have for any playstation enthusiast.

4.0 out of 5 stars As my friend Tony would say, Grrrrrrrrrrreat! 12 Aug. 2004
By Lionn
I'll start by saying this game is not worth it unless you are able to play it online (Network adapter and broadband required) Great game. Although a few problems. I have met many people (Online in SOCOM II and spoke with them using the headset) who have X-Boxes and many other online ps2 games, and they have all said that SOCOM II is the best game out online on a console. Althought in my opinin XBox is a better console, the PS2 has much better games. This game is addictive and amazon.co.uk provides excentlent delivery and product quality.
The problems with the game are numerous. The game can be very annoying at times. You get disconnected at times due to the bad online servers. A lot of the time the hit recognition and lag is bad. YOu could be shooting someone in the head for about 3 seconds and then they turn around and kill you. Or you could be shooting someone then they kill you, then about 4 seconds later they drop down dead and it says you killed them. This game is definetly worth getting and you should buy it if you can get online with your ps2. Can't wait for SOCOM III, when hopefully they will have fixed the bugs. ALSO when the HDD comes out in UK it will fix many problems hopefully. (The HDD is a 40gb hard drive for the ps2 which will enable users to download new maps, patches and weapons and much more for many games.)

this is one of the best games in the world you must get it
you lead 3 other amazingly trained seals who do what ever you want. the enemy ai is one of the best yet, if they are the only one left with a tiny bit of health, he surrenders or runs away (some times) but if you use a flash bang they will mostly all stand down and surrender. the best mission is the upland aussalt mission where you have to take out a castle full of enemys and 3 bosses!!! where you have to catch or "nuetralise" them.
you must get this game a definite definitive five star game!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Should you get Socom 2:U.S Navy SEALs 21 Mar. 2004
By A Customer
You should defiantly get this game its brilliant! I only got the game yesterday but by the time you read this it will be ages ago. When I first got the game I didn't Know what to think, I'm not the type of person who normally goes for army games, but I had to get it. Before I start the game, if there is a training level I usually try it out.Insted I watched the computer do the training for me(BORING).I spent ages doing the first level which turned out to be the easiest in the game. It takes time to get used to the controls. One thing that really does annoy me is, you have an enemy in site and a help box pops up lose your concentration and bang before you know it the enemy has shot you in the head and your dead on the floor. The headset is a big advantage so I decided to spend the extra £10 and get the official PS2 head set with it.
If you have the odd £40/£50 to spare get it, you won't regret it.
P.S.If your headset doesn't fit properly don't worry it will still work as long as its somewhere near your mouth. You won't be able to sell the head set to a game shop if you complete it for health and safety reasons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blimey! 19 Mar. 2004
By A Customer
This is really rather impressive as sequels go.
They have fixed just about everything that was wrong or frustrating about the first game, apparently by reading online message boards and seeing what their public were actually saying about it.
Definitely the way to do it.
They've also tickled up all the stuff that /did/ work last time around so it all really shines.
The only things that dissapoint me are the shortness of the singleplayer campaign (still longer than CoD though) and the continued lack of a quick-save facility.
Thanks to the AI fixes and some neat level design this is actually worth your time as a single player game.
The multiplayer I haven't played yet (exchange not enabled yet. "Only" another two months) but praise for that aspect of the game has been pretty much unanimous.
Well worth your cash.
