What strikes me most about this album is the authority and command that Peter's delivery of his material exudes. Lyrics, music, vocals, playing, and arrangements all work together to move heart, mind, and body. The work of a master musician who has achieved considerable maturity. Track after track hits the spot with haunting melodies and memorable vocal lines all wrapped up in a highly distinctive sound showing increasing influence from world music, but still largely achieved with conventional rock instrumentation. Peter's duet with Kate Bush on "Don't Give Up" brings tears to the eyes whereas "Red Rain", "Sledgehammer", and "In Your Eyes" have a powerful masculinity. A class album in every respect.

This is probably the best Peter Gabriel album since gabriel 4. I'm oh so jealous of his fantastic vocals, and the drumming by stuart copeland(police) and manu katche is fantastic, A bit more accessable than US and definately worth buying if you like Kate Bush as don't give up is a fantastic track. My only slight niggle is that the last track written with laurie anderson is quite awful. Buy it now!

Great stuff. Nearly every song's a winner. A wonderful mix of innovative studio technology and world music rythms. 'Red Rain' is a great opening for any album: 'stop what you are doing and pay attention'. Elsewhere 'In Your Eyes' is heart-breaking; 'We Do What We're Told' wasted and chilling; 'Mercy Street' brimming with haunted lyricism and compassion. Even 'Sledgehammer' remains a big, porky blast, and 'Big Time' cuts sharp and funky. Imaginative. Intelligent. One of he albums of the 80's.

BOUGHT THIS AFTER HEARING 'MERCY STREET' ON PLANET ROCK. WHAT A FINE ALBUM, PETER GABRIEL HAS SUCH A WONDERFUL VOICE,EACH TRACK IS GREAT SO IT HAS TO BE FIVE STARS - MARVELLOUS!

Loads of crowd pleasers
Peter Gabriel joining the sane set! Very well produced album, nicely cleaned up in this remaster with a few good hits and some genuinely involving tracks.
