Snowbound - was eh... 13 Oct 2011

Storyline has two pretty strong characters but they come across more as caricatures. True, they both have a 'trauma' in their pasts which have supposedly created the individuals they are today but the descriptions of those traumas and how they formed the leading characters struck me more as convenience to the storyline than a true character forming experiences. Maybe that was because the hero & heroine struck me as so cardboard cut-out.

This is supposedly an action/romance/thriller type and while there was a great deal of action, it was thrown out and then glossed over so quickly that just as you were getting into it the leading characters, Mallory & Gage, had gotten themselves out of their supposed fix - that simple! And, they do get into quite a few scrapes for such a short novella.

I guess what struck me the most was that Mallory is an FBI agent & Gage a PD Captain, yet they were forever being followed, found, attacked - you get the idea. Neither of them seemed very competent or knowledgeable.

The supposed chemistry between Mallory & Gage never read as real. Indeed, for the 1st 1/2 of the story he wants nothing to do with her. Then suddenly he's got to have her, at least in his bed. Mallory on the other hand wants Gage from the get go, even though he does his level best to be unfriendly and downright nasty upon occasion.

Words of advice to the author. There is some great potential with this storyline, if it were fleshed out a lot more. More careful editing needs to be conducted as several errors left me scratching my head and re-reading a passage (or four). Conduct a little more research into the CJ fields & agencies before you write about them. Also, the sex scenes were very mild - almost as though the author felt she had to quickly throw them in but wasn't quite sure how to go about it.

For the price, you can't go wrong. It is what it is. I've read much worse. But I've also read better.

Snowbound 31 Jan 2012

Snowbound is a great read. I was really looking forward to reading the second book in this series. This book is the story of Mallory Burke who is the sister of John Burke from the first book in the series. Mallory is an FBI agent and is working undercover on a personal quest to stop a human trafficker when she is caught. A snowstorm is going on and she is put in a car to be taken to a mountain cabin to be tortured for information. She escapes into the mountains and to the cabin of Gage Broderick. Gage is a cop, though Mallory doesn't know this at first and when she finds out, she can't feel reassured and that she is "safe". Something is up with Gage. The man is hiding something - like what he's doing in a mountain cabin in the middle of winter all alone. He doesn't provide any information which adds to Mallory's unease. Added to that, she knows it's a matter of time before the trafficker finds her, despite the snowstorm, and she needs to get ready to defend herself for that.

I really enjoyed this story and the characters. Mallory is driven to find the trafficker. Yes, her drive is personal (the reader finds out why in the course of the story) but there are also the lives of twelve women at stake who are depending on her catching the criminal. Mallory's fierce determination comes across, as does her despair at times that she will be able to do so in time to save the women. Gage is being eaten away by something and I felt his torment. When the reason is revealed, I felt his pain. I loved the crisp dialog between the hero and heroine and was rooting for them to get together.
The book moves at a fast pace which is how I like books to be. I have now read two books in the Protectors series and enjoyed them both. This is now one of my favorite series.
