I'll admit from the start that I am a bit of a headphone collector and I own numerous pairs from Sennheiser, Beats, Sony, Bose and now these new SMS Sync ones. I should also mention that I run a music website, so I take my music listening VERY seriously.

The first thing I noticed about these headphones is the build quality. They are much better than Dr Dre's Beats headphones and you have no fear that the headband will snap like the Beats have been known to do. The molded memory foam earpieces make these very comfortable to wear for prolonged periods and whilst my ears got warm wearing them, they didn't pinch or hurt at all.

These come in a sturdy case that holds the manual, various wires, AC charger with assorted international adaptors, a wire for when you want to use these in a more traditional way and the dongle for Wireless use. Both the dongle and headphones were very quick to charge up and within a few hours I was ready to test out the wireless capabilities.

There are buttons on the outside of the earpieces which control the wireless sync, bass boost, volume and track skipping. These buttons feel very sturdy.

I have let these burn in with some solid playing for over a week now (fortunately for me I can listen to music at work and these have had some serious hours put through them already) and the sound has settled enough for me to give a reasonable appraisal of the quality. I have played a vast range of music through these to give them a fair trial from thrash metal, blues, swing, jazz, classical, world music, rock, pop, electronica, relaxation albums, spoken word/podcasts, folk, country, hip hop and rap and more besides. These handle the majority of these genres well and the sound does seem pretty balanced.... The classical music didn't have too much high end as some headphones seem to produce and the bass wasn't too muddy either. This coped with all the musical styles I threw at it easily.

Sadly when I used the wireless dongle, even when sat right next to the ipod or stereo I was using at the time, the sound tended to cut out for no discernable reason. I then had to re-sync and carry on as before. This happened a few times in the first few days and I found it so disappointing I quickly reverted back to the traditional wire. When using it wireless it skipped tracks well and adjusting the volume was no problem. I found the bass boost a bit lack lustre compared to the Beats, but I have always found the Beats range too bass heavy anyway, but if bass is your thing then consider these other headphones as well.

The passive noise cancelling (I.e. using the construction and design to block out unwanted sound) was the most disappointing aspect of these headphones for me. Even wearing these indoors with no-one else in and nothing else on I could still hear things like the computer whirring or children playing outside. I have a set of Bose AE2 headphones which are vastly superior at passive noise cancelling (they are almost like industrial ear protectors they are so good) and they come at a fraction of the cost. I dread to think what my fellow commuters would think if I wore these on the train as my wife attests to the fact that there is distinct sound leakage with these. I have stuck to my beloved Bose for commuting so far.

That is another minor thing, I know it is the fashion now for big headphones, but even by that standard these seem rather large and I wouldn't want to carry these with me on a long haul flight due to the size alone.

Finally, despite the good sound quality of these I have to say that again the Bose are superior at a fraction of the cost. I have tried so many headphones over the years and after trying these, Dr Dre Beats and even some excellent Sennhesiser (that also have better passive noise cancelling than these!) I have to say the Bose wins every time. That's not to say you shouldn't give these a try and if having the latest gadgets and looking fashionable are your thing then definitely give these a test run. But if sound is more important to you and you're on a budget, then give the Bose a try at the same time. I feel I may go back to them more often than picking these up.

I have lost count of the money I have lost over the years convincing myself that I could get good quality without paying through the nose for it. I've lost count of the times I have had to spend more replacing a product that I thought would last. Even my husband is complaining about his Dre headphones and they weren't cheap. I decided to take the plunge and spend more than I ever have on headphones and I really couldn't be more happier. What a bargain when I think of all that it offers. Sturdy, perfect sound, case for travelling, stylish for a 30+ woman like myself. It is very evident that the clever business man in 50 waited for everyone to flood the market with headphones, he then researched all the flaws, failings and feedback from customers and came out with a first class product to rival them all. Clever man.

i bought these headphones a few days ago, and they are absolutely phenomenal ! the sound and the durability of the headphones are really outstanding !

BUT the headphone doesn't work perfect with the iPhone 5 and iPad mini or iPod shuffle. it's transmitting music very fine and the op and down volume buttons work and also the bass booster button, but the button to skip the tracks doesn't work at all !

that's a big laid down for me personally !

but i can recommend them ! really good headphone !

Okay so if you're looking at the reviews then clearly you haven't been put off by the price tag, which is, to be quite honest, the ONLY reason I haven't given this 5 stars.

Having had average quality wireless headphones before, I assumed that was the norm, and that being wireless meant foregoing on some of the sound quality. You can also use them with the included wire which means you won't waste your batteries when wireless is not actually necessary.

You can increase the bass levels - which is amazing, and is like living in the middle of your subwoofer! But likewise these headphones just make everything sound , well, wow! I'm not very gadgety or techy so to be honest I thought as long as they didn't come from the pound shop, headphones are going to produce similar quality sound, just with more comfort and less external noise. These are heavy, but are not uncomfortable, even though I have quite a small head.

You can even charge via USB, and then revert to the cable if your batteries should run low.

So, in summary, if you're not put off by the price, get these, you won't regret it!

This is a rather pricey bit of kit- likely due to the endorsement by gangster-raper 50 percent (real name Curtis Stigers). I didn't personally know of the chap before, so I set about some googling. From what I was able to gather, he appears to be rather a controversial figure, with quite the devil-may-care attitude to life- something of a twenty-first century version of the young Tommy Steele, if you like. The question is, would you be paying for bull-shinola or substance? Personally, I'm not altogether sure. For a product that seems heavily geared towards style and image, it comes in a pathetic little carry case- that looks more like the sort of thing in which a big girl's blouse might transport their fish paste sandwiches to primary school, than anything worthy of street-credibility.

So how about the performance? Well, let's start with the negatives. I was rather disappointed to discover that the sound quality was bloody awful, upon connecting to my digital piano. I discovered a notable time-lag on wireless, which I meant I had to use the the cable (so expect the same time lack of synchronisation with anything involving video). Wherever I set the volume (even when undesirably low) any loud playing caused the sound to become extremely distorted and overloaded by unnatural reverb. It comes out much better with a pair of Sennheiser's that were under a pony. Next up, I tried connecting to my tablet device. Firstly, the wireless dongle didn't register, whatever I did. When I tried with the cable I discovered an even worse problem with distortion than on my piano. Again, my cheap Sennheiser's work fine in the same jack.... I suspect that it may be a compatibility issue with the control button on the cable- a pointless device by which you can apparently skip tracks by pressing a single button a specific number of times. Well, considering that the cable is less than half a metre long, the ability to skip tracks via morse code (instead of by reaching across some ten or twenty additional centimetres, to a directly designated control) is hardly essential. An expensive product should function properly in all standard headphone jacks. This does not.

So, nought out of two so far- when it comes to basic functionality. Fortunately, it does work a lot better when connected to my computer. The sound is very good indeed at times- but again I found certain recordings to sound as spongy and overloaded by reverb as if they had been recorded in the local swimming baths. Turning the extra bass on or off made scant difference. It seems to be something of a national lottery (as some recordings really do sound great) but for others to be so much as listenable, you'd likely have to spend ages tinkering with graphic equalizers. If you listen to music with genuine dynamic range (rather than the monotonous bilge that the likes of fifty percent churn out), you may regularly find that it's impossible to set a volume level where quieter moments are of adequate intensity (rather than both distant and empty sounding)- without the level of louder moments going on to be physically painful (and again grossly distorted, at times).

I can't make any direct comparisons to other higher-end products, but I don't believe for a second that notably cheaper alternatives aren't as good (or even superior). The "passive noise cancellation" is a cynical marketing ploy- that accurately translates to "no noise cancellation". The only noise cancellation on offer here (which lies solely in fact there is some foam around the ears) is the same kind of "noise cancellation" that I am engaging in, should I cup my hands over my ears in futile a bid to drown out Doreen's nightly snoring. Even if not technically in breach of the trade descriptions act, adding the word "passive" (to get away with it) is a disgusting way to mislead customers about what is actually on offer. Even a cheap model can do a basic version of the real thing, but evidently the manufacturers of such a pricey model would sooner twist language so as to create a false portrayal, than involve genuine noise cancellation technology? Anyway, if you're dumb enough to think that a product that is linked to a talentless American criminal will improve your image (and have a spare wodge of cash) then go ahead. Personally, I couldn't give a damn about the affiliation. The only rapper I personally have any interest in is "Lil Wayne", largely because my wife's pet-name for myself happens to be the very same (a nickname that had its origins on our wedding night). Anyway, take away the endorsement and you're left with nothing close to reasonable value for money. Read more ›
