L7 an all-girl rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1985 was named after a 1950's slang phrase meaning square which was a contradiction of massive proportions as these girls were anything but square. Due to their sound and image, they were often associated with the grunge movement and made big efforts to live up to the rebellious behaviour expected from the grungy set with provocative and at time profane lyrics, clothes flying in the face of good taste and elegance, aggressive rumbustious stage performances, and manners and language set to a 'shock' level.

An example of their stage antics occurred at The Reading Festive, where they experienced 'sound equipment difficulties' and were forced to pause their set, resulting in the crowd growing restless and throwing mud (it was outdoors) onto the stage. In protest, lead vocalist Donita Sparks removed her tampon on-stage and threw it into the crowd screaming "Eat my used tampon, f..kers!" This has been referred to as one of the "most unsanitary pieces of rock memorabilia in history". It is not known whether the said missile has been offered at any subsequent sale of rock memorabilia, and if so, the price paid.

Their 1991 Album "Smell The Magic", is a short, swift 9 track affair, in which the girls exuberantly mix metal, punk and classic rock, resulting in a sound that updates the Runaways' bold take on rock'n'roll. A sledgehammer approach to lyrics is used on the hard rockin' tunes "Broomstick", and "Packin' A Rod" but the albums highlights come from the aggressively worded and raucously performed 'bawl-athon' "Shove", and the hyper-charged "Fast And Furious".

L7 display bundles of attitude, energy, and barnstorming three-chord riffs, which produces a rip-roaring and for a punk rock addict an injection of invigorating entertainment.

This is the beginning of L7's rise. 9 scintillating tracks that burn into your mind and have you tapping your foot by the second verse. By the time you reach American Society your whole life will be changed for ever and you will be happy.

Their songwriting's not exactly fantastic, opting for militaristic call-and-response vocals and structures. Nonetheless there are some definite moments of inspiration - Shove, Death Wish and American Society are probably the best songs on the record; stomping, dirty rock songs with a fiery punk attitude and vitriolic passion.

I'd like to give this record 3.5 stars but that's not really a possibility, sadly. I'd definitely recommend it; it's still a lot stronger than you'd be led to think by their disappearance from the musical landscape.

This is GENUINE Rock, too. We're not talking halfway-house, second-rate, insipid wannabe music. We're talking guitar solos, feedback, shout-along choruses, riffs. The real deal. This band rock far harder than a lot of bands with male members and it's alarming to have seen them disappear into oblivion as they seem to have done. American Society, in particular, seems to me to be a much better version of Green Day's American Idiot. It's also pretty nice to hear women playing a form of music that's often derided as an overtly and laughably male one.

Lyrically, however, this record often falls pretty far from great and, as I said, the songwriting is not always top notch. Worth picking up, but perhaps not the best L7 album to start with.

As far as female grunge music goes, L7 are probably as angry as they come. Whilst their lyrics don't always strike the most meaning into the listener, they are nonetheless enjoyable. Listening to their music expels negativity and anger through the thrashing of their instruments and the coarse vocal style.
