the phone to have !! 13 Mar 2007
By i.pod VINE™ VOICE
I have on of these and they are great - it does exactly what it said on the box - it lets me use my skype service without my PC being on,it connects to my Netger 108Mbps DG834PN router and works fine so i can sit in my front room skypeing my mates all night just like im using my home phone.i have used it out and about as this phone will work with the Cloud ( Public hotspot provider ) i had never heard of them but they are massive all over europe and are in all of my local pubs !! i gave it 4 stars and that is because i paid £129.99 for this phone - bit pricey but when they get to sub £50-£60 it will be the right price for what i use it for , watch the price then get one !!!!

This is a good start 31 Mar 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase
WiFi Skype/VOIP phones are in their infancy and this is a good start (hence my four star rating).

It is BIG and the battery life is rubbish, just like the 3G mobile phone I had four years ago, the one I have now is tiny and the battery sometimes lasts a few days so I know things will move on.

It is a shame there is no video, that would make this a must have gaget; there is no text chat either and I think there should be, it is quite normal to text from a mobile phone.

I managed to buy mine when Amazon were only charging 50 quid and I think this phone is worth that sort of money.

The good news is that this phone can automatically update its software so I hope that as the manufacturer understands better how this product should work my user experience will get better, hopefully the first thing they will do is add text chat.

The bad news is that hot spot coverage on my side of town is non existent, again this will improve, but I'm not sure I want to pay 7 quid a month to The Cloud with a 12 month lock-in for what will never be 100% coverage for just voice.

My limited experience roaming between wifi networks has so far been nigh on disasterous (I am assuming this will be improved), once when roaming back into my home wifi network the phone did not connect and the wifi router stopped, not necessarily anything to do with this phone but it has never happened before :).

All the calls I have made have had excellent voice quality at both ends (I have been asking the recipients).

Wifi reception seems good, it finds one more network from my house than my Sony Vaio laptop and the internal walls of my house which are built of bricks with excepionally high iron content do not seems to defeat this phone as they do some devices.

I am glad I bought this product but I am glad I only paid 50 quid.

I have had both a 'SMC WSKP100 Wi-Fi Phone For Skype` and a 'DUALphone 3088 For Skype cordless phone` in use for over three weeks now, working on separate Skype accounts, and would find it hard to fault either product. Both phones are of course types which are used without having a computer on. The SMC Wi-Fi phone, for which you need to already have a wireless router on your internet connection, is more portable and is very much like a mobile, needing recharging from time to time. The DUALphone is like a cordless landline phone permanently sitting in its own charging cradle and its separate base station needs a spare ethernet connection on your modem or router.
