Product Description

Product Description

Now in its third edition, the ground-breaking Artech House bestseller "SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol" offers the most comprehensive and current understanding of this revolutionary protocol for call signaling and IP Telephony. Essential reading for anyone involved in the development and operation of voice or data networks, the third edition has been significantly expanded with brand new chapters on SIP security, services in SIP, presence and instant messaging, and Peer-to-Peer SIP. The book explains how SIP is a highly-scalable and cost-effective way to offer new and exciting telecommunication feature sets. From an examination of SIP as a key component in the Internet multimedia conferencing architecture...to a look at the future direction of SIP, practitioners get the knowledge they need to design 'next generation' networks and develop new applications and software stacks. This title is suitable for telecommunications/wireless engineers and professionals, professors and students whose work involves voice or data networks and the Internet multimedia architecture.

I bought the 2nd edition of this book back in 2004 and the technical content is superb, by far the best of several SIP books I purchased at the time. I used the book extensively while implementing a back-to-back user agent for an embedded system.

I did however have serious problems with the binding of the book, with pages falling out almost immediately. Within a few weeks I had to keep a pot of glue with the book in order to glue pages back in as they fell out despite being extremely careful with it and treating it like an ancient manuscript.

I have since looked around on the Internet and discovered that other people have had the same problem with other books from Artech House.
Considering the price I paid for the book (over £60) this is not really acceptable and is the main reason I am reluctant to "upgrade" to the third edition and will probably deter me from buying any further books published by Artech House.

So, in summary: A great book technically, but keep a pot of glue handy to fix it as it falls apart...

A pick for any communications engineering library 19 Dec 2009
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol is a pick for any communications engineering library at the college level. It appears in its third edition and provides details on call signaling and IP telephony, and has been expanded with numerous new chapters covering peer-to-peer SIP, ABNF and XML, and other details key to telecommunications network development and SIP uses in Internet architecture.

One of the most comprehensive guides on SIP that I had read 16 May 2011
By Nik Liepins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this book as a reference to SIP and in order to improve my knowledge in VOIP protocols. I started to read it and I just could not stop - this books is written in a very user-friendly style, explains a lot of aspects of SIP and I beleive that it will be one of the books on the self in my office.
I had not finished the book yet but I can tell that for me reading a book is much better then reading RFC's from internet on the computer screen and I feel that I receive the same amount of the knowledge from this book as if I would have spent hours on the internet looking for proper material.
Hope that helps.

Beware - the Kindle Edition is not the third edition 19 Nov 2010
By Ken Adams - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Even though this page seems to indicate that the Kindle Edition of the book is the third edition of the book, it is not. It is the second edition of the book. There are substantive additions to the third edition. No one at Amazon seemed to be able to tell me if or when the third edition of the book might be available on Kindle, so for now, it's back to 20th century technology - carting around three inches of paper and cardboard.
