Gordon Giltrap is not the most aggressively self-promoting of musicians, but over the course of four decades has quietly built up a reputation as a musician of awesome playing technique and tunefulness. 'Shining Morn' is the umpteenth, and latest example of the man's music, with a generous running time and truly breathtaking cross-section of musical styles. There is much to admire and enjoy in this album, and the moods shift from sun-dappled beauty to more strident and sharper sounds. Gordon doesn't know how to make a bad record, and 'Shining Morn', plus the superb Edsel reissues are welcome additions to the man's absorbing and hugely enjoyable body of work. Why isn't GG as lauded as (his hero) Bert Jansch of John Renbourn? Maybe he's just too modest!
