I've had an allotment for many years and accept the usual glut of produce by overeating, giving away or freezing. I've always been disappointed with freezing. I have tried drying plums and tomatoes in the fan over overnight. So I knew that that method gave a good result. But, my fan oven broke this year. We've had such a glut of plums this year that I finally decided to buy a dehydrator. I found this on amazon. It was very much less expensive that others I'd seen. I thought I could trust it because it was made in Germany and the price wasn't too much to lose if it was a disaster. Well - it was far from a disaster. It was delivered the next day which was amazing and just in the middle of our glut. We started drying plums that very day.

The product is very basic, there's no thermostat or no timer. It's just a low powered heater and fan with fitted plastic trays. The trays are molded with no moving parts - so there's only 2 options for tray height, low or high. It worked very well. It's very much quieter and less expensive in power than the oven. In fact, it's very quiet, just a low hum. It's smaller than I expected - about the size of a small hat box. But it holds about 5kg of plums. After 11 hours, the plums were reduced to about a third the size. They were nice and aquidgy with a more intense flavour. I don't trust them to keep in that state, so I put them in the freezer. I've done that before with oven dried plums and the result is very good. They're nice either eaten as they come our or to bake with. [I wonder if they would keep for months if we used the vacuum packer.]

There is some variability - the top trays get less warm air so don't try as much as the lower trays. You can use this to mix fruit with different drying times.

So far, we've dried plums, apples and courgettes. They all dry to about a third the volume. At this stage I don't know how they will be when reconstituted. We put dried apple in a pot of yogurt - after about 2 hours it has softened a bit but was still 'chewy'.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the product.

This product is absolutely satisfying me in every way as it seems to do most tasks in far less time than the instructions imply. I have done beef jerky in less than 5 hours and just about evry fruit you care to dry including kiwis', strawberries, pears, mangos', bannanas, grapes, apples, blueberries and probably more. You have to keep an eye on most but the grapes if whole can be left overnight. Amazing product and highly recommended. You would think I work for the company but I am unemployed so if they have a job shout.

Cheers

this machine does the job at a good price compared with more sophisticated models. i don't mind the lack of thermostat or timer, which i probably wouldn't use anyway. the trays are fairly easy to clean with hot water or by machine, but there's one design flaw which causes problems: the base is very hard to clean effectively without removing it, which requires a special star-shaped screwdriver head for the central heater cover (presumably for safety reasons). i suspect this would prove difficult for most household users, and it's a pity the manufacturer didn't think to fit standard screws for this part or better still, design a base which can be easily removed for cleaning without exposing the heating and fan elements.
